require professional certificate, but it is good to have • What is more important are the capability to master and become an expert on a particular Open Source software or technology • Professional certificate is just a “confirmation” of personal capability • Multinational corporation might need professional certificate because they already accustomed to non-Open Source career
to master Open Source • The best time to join Open Source is during university years • I learn about Open Source when in Year 2, with help from community and documentation on Internet • Must have a deep “inquisitive” attitude
like Linux and application in network • I learn how to install and configure Linux, such as Red Hat/Fedora, Mandriva, Debian, Slackware • I create Internet sharing system, music streaming server, printer sharing and file sharing during university years
Source is by joining community • Community is the knowledge sharing centre • Community is the local reference centre that are usually joined by expert in certain software/technology • Nearly all problem that you face with Open Source, have been faced by other people, and there are solution for it
Source Software Group • MyPenguin99 • FOSSmy • OWASP Malaysia • Fedora Malaysia • OpenSuSE Malaysia • Ubuntu Malaysia • Debian Malaysia • Code Android Malaysia • Wordpress Malaysia • PCBSD Malaysia • FOSSChix Malaysia • PHP Malaysia • Python Malaysia • Joomla Malaysia
– organized by OSDC.my • MyGOSSCON – organized by MAMPU ➢ Each conference have special rate for student that are usually lower than public participant ➢ Best opportunity to know software, company and Open Source expert ➢ Good place to create your network
career opportunity • Reality: As listed, there are a lot of career opportunity in Open Source, either local or MNC. The more important question is, are you more expert than your next competitor to get the job offered
learn (have steep learning curve) • Reality: Any technology is not easy to learn, either Open Source or not. To master SAP, for example, you need a long time and have to take expensive courses. With Open Source, you require long time as well, but the information and knowledge about the technology can be obtained easily and did not have to take expensive courses.
