  1. MOBILITY • Mobility in the cities is increasingly complex due

    to erratic patterns of the everyday life and logistic requirements • Mismatch between demand and supply due to the urban sprawl that has worsened the level of services of any type of transport system • Traffic congestion costs ◦ the EU economy an estimated £200bn a year (2% of GDP) ◦ The UK this costs the economy £5.8bn each year, or £672 per car-commuting household ▪ £583m is wasted on fuel (e.g. traffic congestion) each year ▪ £453 per commuter a year in lost time (£3.7bn) ▪ £1.5bn annually lost in hold-ups to business or freight vehicles • That is added to local household costs. • Impact of congestion is worse in urban centres where 70% of transportation CO2 and particulate pollution is generated by transport
