3. What was a Smart City? The first wave was driven by technology companies with a view to sell their products • IBM - “one that makes optimal use of all the interconnected information available today to better understand and control its operations and optimize the use of limited resources.” • Cisco - “scalable solutions that take advantage of information & communications technology (ICT) to increase efficiencies, reduce costs, and enhance quality of life.”
4. What is a Smart City? The second wave was being driven by citizen engagement, governments and LAs • Reaching out through digital platforms, open data portals, civic crowd-funding, co-design and living labs, hackathons, innovation competitions and more • Improve life in cities and attracting foreign investment to increase economic growth
5. What can a Smart City be? The third wave is organisations using the city as a platform to create new value • Disrupting old business models and bypassing old systems, often delivering directly to citizens and consumers • Startups are using the digital connectivity and infrastructure of cities as a platform for providing consumer-oriented services such as Uber, Deliveroo, Airbnb

INFRASTRUCTURE - Funding calls Funding calls • DCMS - Mobile Development Support (5G testbeds and trials) ◦ This DCMS competition encourages the development of a UK ‘5G ecosystem’ with technology and deployment, testbeds and trials to stimulate the development of 5G use cases and business models. ◦ Registration closes: Wednesday 6 December 2017 12:00 pm • DCMS - Local full fibre networks ◦ New Digital Infrastructure Investment Fund will unlock over £1 billion for full fibre broadband across the country.
