Aligning SAP with how the Business really operates (Mastering SAP Collaborate 2026 Singapore)

For the Mastering SAP Collaborate 2026 conference in Singapore, I share how we are using SAP Signavio, LeanIX, and other tools in Syensqo's business transformation to ensure process models directly shaped organisational design, security authorisations inside S/4HANA, process controls, and the SAP Fiori-based user experience.

Too often, SAP systems drift away from how work is actually performed, leading to role sprawl, audit exposure, and user frustration. By treating process models as living design artefacts that are integrated into system configuration and operations — and not static documentation that nobody looks at post go-live — Syensqo kept business operations and system configuration aligned from the outset.

The result is a more controlled and automated SAP operating model that supports imperative processes, compliance, security, and long-term sustainability.

  2. Our foundations The Solvay Conference of 1911 stands as a

beacon of visionary thinking and collaboration. Ernest Solvay brought 24 of the world’s most brilliant scientific minds together - including Albert Einstein and Marie Curie. It was more than just a meeting of brilliant scientists — it was an extraordinary convergence of explorers, driven by a shared passion for unraveling the mysteries of the universe. In the spirit of those pioneering minds, Syensqo emerges as a brand that embraces the legacy of the Solvay Conference, embodying the same adventurous spirit and forward-thinking mindset. Like those intrepid explorers who dared to push the boundaries of what was known, Syensqo is embarking on its own odyssey of scientific discovery, exploring new territories and discovering transformative ideas. 3

    ~12 months of work. Invaluable in design walk-throughs with business SMEs. Lots of Signavio Content! L1 L2 L3 BPM L4 BPM L5 Individual Tasks 9 × 637 × 11,361 × 2,276 distinct Executables 80 × 224 ×
  20. Functional consultants must be responsible for their models. Modelling is

part of the job – not “admin work” for a junior analyst. Real BPM skills are very hard to find à Training. Functional Consultants as Modellers
  21. 2 experienced BPM consultants - a skill in its own

right. Documented modelling standards Mandatory training as part of onboarding, with homework Sandpit section in Signavio Twice-weekly “office hours” Individualised tutoring Quality checks as part of sign-off process How we taught 100+ people to create BPMs
  22. Restrict the types of models that can be created. Restrict

the objects that can be used. Encode modelling rules in the system; enforce on save/publish è “Shift left” compliance to the consultants. Use Signavio to enforce modelling standards
  23. Not literally “Best Practice”; more like “Starter Pack”... Usually only

“Happy Path”; few exceptions Myopically focused on SAP functionality only Many SAP modules not represented at all! è Models were inspired by SAP BP content, but expand significantly on them What about SAP Best Practice?
  24. LeanIX holds an inventory of all: • IT Systems •

Interfaces between systems Sync’ed to Signavio for use in modelling LeanIX à Signavio Integration
  25. Solution Process becomes a key attribute for test planning &

execution Enables analytics e.g. “Show me pass/fail by process” Use BPMs in Testing

to build complex workflows, integrations, and extracts. We used MaxAttention Expert on Demand to build this. Sends weekly snapshots of BPM data to Datasphere
  30. To sustain the process models, they must be operationally useful.

“Make the right thing the easy thing” à Embed into access controls Embed in Operations
  31. Use process roles as the building blocks Each is designed

to be SoD-free Process Modelling L1 L2 L3 BPM L4 BPM L5 Individual Tasks Warehouse Processor (EWM) Physical Warehouse Processor (EWM)
  32. Maps abstract process roles from the BPMs to the ~700

Job-Role Mapping Job Definition Warehouse Coordinator Warehouse Supervisor Warehouse Operator Customer Back Office … Process Roles Warehouse Processor X X Physical Warehouse Processor X X Billing Processor X Planned Order Scheduler …
  33. We build one master role for each Job. SoD checks

ensure that master roles are free of SoD conflicts Job-Role Mapping Job Definition Warehouse Coordinator Warehouse Supervisor Warehouse Operator Customer Back Office … Process Roles Warehouse Processor X X Physical Warehouse Processor X X Billing Processor X Planned Order Scheduler … Master Role
  34. We use code to generate derived roles. These include organization

scopes, e.g. by Plant, by Country, etc. Implements the Need to Know principle Role Derivation
  35. System access is determined by HR information, business processes, and

Job-Role mapping. Any authorization changes must start in Signavio Deterministic User Access Signavio SuccessFactors Process Role content Job Info Employing Location Business Unit + = Job-Role mapping

  37. Treat Process Models as a first-class project deliverable Invest in

training consultants & governance Sweat the asset – use the models to provide structure for other project tasks Implement a “forcing function” to ensure maintenance isn’t optional after go-live Key Insights
