  1. ABOUT ME. Hello, I am Nancy Kumar. User Experience Design

Lead at Boeing Domus Academy AEROSPACE
  2. But how about it in PAST??? Did we have any

digital Touch Interfaces then?? Or shall we call them Display and Controls?? Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  3. Were those Good Design? Did you ever see the time

actually set on one of these? Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  4. got evolved from press buttons to a fully-functional graphical user

interface Were those Good Design? Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  5. Designers and developers have been building screen-based user interfaces since

the 1970s. As time went on, hardware evolved, the design possibilities grew, and the decades that followed featured rapid progress. From text on a screen, to a fully-functional graphical user interface (GUI), its the job of a UX designer to help people make sense of their technology and what it can do. And it got Evolved Images under fair use only Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  6. As technology evolved, it started to feature more realistic images,

more fluid interactions, focussing more towards future. Consumers were wowed as UX design got ever more vivid and lifelike. Evolution led to better Experience Augmented Reality Apps Cockpit of future by Thales BMW iDrive Car Infotainment Cockpit of future by Thales Virtual Reality Apps Images under fair use only
  7. Design in Aviation Few years back in Aviation Industry “Human

Factors” was very popular commercial aviation But what exactly is “Human Factors” Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  8. Human Factors in Aviation In simple words, Human Factors use

knowledge of human abilities and limitations to Design Systems, Organizations, Tools, and Consumer Products for safe, efficient, and comfortable human use. Initially Human Factors focused on various domains like flight deck design, crew resource management (CRM) or maintenance resource management (MRM) which considered a much broader range of elements such as Cognitive Psychology Human Performance Physiology Visual Perception Ergonomics Human-Computer Interface Design Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  9. Known areas in Aviation Flight Navigation System Safety & Emergency

Fuel Efficiency Flight Planning & Operations Surveillance Ground Operations & ATC | Air Traffic Controller Pilot Training & Flight Simulators Air Cargo Transportation Flight Deck & Cockpit Controls Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019 CMS Cabin Management System MRO Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul
  10. Pilot Insight application aids Pilots & Crews in making advanced

informed fuel decisions & track personal performance. + + + Pilot flying history Aircraft details Smart fuel analytics suggestions Pilot performance data Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  11. Problem: A solution which helps Pilots to fly better with

respect to time and fuel efficiency. There’s no easy access to his/her flight performance data history. In aviation industry there’s lot of data around aircraft history, flying history etc. How we make best use of these data. History of Pilot Insight Do you think, is this the best solution? Can we do something better? Solution: The proposal was a desktop application which gives smart recommendations on flying methods, fuel consumption and performance which helps the pilot to fly better. Instead of desktop application we made ipad application which is more mobile and which can give quick access of data to pilot. Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  12. Hangar Maintenance Solution A solution which helps with better 3D

augmented view of aircraft parts with overlay graphics and also gives real-time updates. Mixed Reality technology with multi modal interaction for devices like head mounted displays & smartphones Image: https://fortune.com/2016/12/27/delta-boeing-787-dreamliner-aircraft/ Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  13. Understanding “The System” Fault occurs in aircraft Fault report and

log generated. Fault data or Raw bite dump collected manually & shared in person Based on the complexity of maintenance it is divided in following categories: • Heavy/Hangar maintenance • Engine maintenance • Line maintenance • Component & config maintenance Fault report is analyzed by lead technician and task is assigned to respective engineers Engineer collects reports, parts(inventory) & tools needed for the task and reaches work center Engineer does visual inspection for accurate fault analysis. Maintenance Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  14. Opportunity Area Communication assistance needed while maintenance Fault data and

reports are collected manually, inspite of having good communication method no monitoring data is transferred. Major Dependency on Visual Inspection Only 50% of the work can be planned, rest 50% of the unscheduled work is identified during visual inspection Insufficient information on non-serviceable & other parts can worked upon Insufficient information about non-serviceable spare parts in inventory that require servicing or repair and a method for scheduling these spare parts needs to meet the scheduling and logistics requirements Duration of maintenance not known as of now The duration of maintenance work may vary. The final composition of the maintenance project to be performed depends on the outcome of inspections. No method to link interdependent tasks Maintenance tasks may be interdependent. Tasks may form a logical sequence of maintenance actions. The tasks may belong to same source. Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  15. Design Solution Hangar Maintenance Solution A solution which helps with

better 3D augmented view of aircraft parts with overlay graphics and also gives real-time updates. Using Mixed Reality technology with multi modal interaction for devices like head mounted displays & smartphones Images under fair use only Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  16. Design Solution Maintenance engineer Early fault projection and preparation can

be done with live solution feed if needed. Real-Time updates on the faults reported to the system through the live aircraft data in the case of any doubt of errors or faults found in aircraft. Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  17. Design Solution Visual scanning and inspection help in identifying the

faults occurred in the aircraft with the help of mixed reality technology, which also helps in identifying associated inventories beforehand Fault Identified View fault details View fault details Other connected devices Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
  18. Design Solution Part details We can have other hand held

devices connected and talking to each other using IoT technology. Similar set of data can be displayed and further details can be seen. It can be used by other maintenance guy too for better communication. Repair Solution Visual inspection and part analysis Detailed visualized fault details of all the parts for quick turnaround Nancy Kumar | UX India 2019
