Putting Scottish Canals on the (world) map!

A look at how Scottish Canals have adopted new technology to add value to the organisation and satisfy the demand from tourists. It also looks at how Scottish Canals engaged with one of the world’s biggest technology providers (in Google) and completed an exercise to capture the footage from its canal towpaths in order to showcase its assets to the world.

    mapping service from Google. • Offers satellite imagery, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets (Street View), real-time traffic conditions (Google Traffic), and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle or public transportation • >1bn monthly users • 50% of global internet users use service • A truly global audience.

    convince Google of our need & our plans • Who was going to do the trekking? • Doesn’t work that well when its raining or really sunny! • Opportunity to showcase our assets – off & on the water!

    Google Trekker • We used Scottish Canals Asset Inspectors to do the trekking • It’s a 20kg (expensive!) machine • Some varying responses from
 canalsiders • The team absolutely owned it!!
