Revival and Recreation: Policy-making and the Transformation of Canals in the Late Twentieth and Early Twenty-first Centuries

Transformations of canal systems since the mid-20th century, from industrial transportation routes to sites of recreation and leisure, have involved local and national governments in a diversity of international settings. Highlighting the evolving place of canals within post-World War II British economic and social planning, this paper seeks to draw policy makers into a wider conversation regarding the intersecting evolutionary paths of both canal policy and social and recreational policies in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
