  1. "I need to go to the store, but on the

way I'll get a phone call, so 'Hi, Mom', and while she starts talking….. I'll be looking up the store address on GPS, but that'll take a second to load, so I'll turn down the radio so I can hear Mom better. …keep driving and talking to Mom….. Ah, finally the GPS got the directions, now..."
  2. × Imagine go to restaurant, order burger, and pay for

it  I’ve made a request for a value back (burger) × The cashier hands me a receipt with an order number on it  This order number is a promise that ensures that eventually, I should receive my burger. × So the order number represents my future burger
  3. × While I wait, I can do other things, like

send a text message to a friend. × Eventually, I hear, "Order 15!”, I hand my receipt to the cashier, and take my burger. × In other words, once my future value was ready, I exchanged my promise for the value itself.
  4. × Promise other possible outcome: Cashier call my order number,

and says: "I'm sorry, but we appear to be all out of burgers.“ × Future values: success or failure
