  1. TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF MOVING - Moving house is

an exciting and life changing experience, saying goodbye to your old dusty house and hello to your brand spanking new home. Although in the long run moving house can be a life affirming change of scene, in the here and now it's often a pain in the neck, and perhaps more importantly in your wallet. - After having dealt with unthinkable sums of money buying your new house and selling your old one, the last thing you need is further expenses. However moving can be a very expensive business, that is unless you know how to do it correctly. Here at Compare the Man and Van we help people move every day, and over the years we have amassed some very useful tips and tricks to help you keep costs down. Not only will we find you the best deal on your trusty removal men (who will also help you pack) but we’ll guide you on your transition and make sure your wallet isn’t hard hit in the process. -
  2. YOU HAVE THE POWER - Government’s help-to-buy scheme and universally

low borrowing costs for mortgages have lead to a rise in the amount of estate agents wanting to sell your home. This means that there is a rise in buyers, which means as a seller you have a lot more opportunity to get what you want from your estate agent. - The most common amount of VAT your estate agent will take on your property is 2%, this can range from 1.5% up to 2.5% for the less independent agencies. Most have a minimum fee of £1500, so if you’re house is valuable enough for this to be 1% then this is a safe and realistic target to barter with. - After this be sure to ask for a written statement of the fees you will be charged, this avoids any nasty extra surprises like a £400 premium listing fee on Rightmove for example. NEGOTIATE WITH YOUR ESTATE AGENT
  3. ONE MAN’S JUNK... - Not only is having less stuff

going to be cheaper, but the stuff you leave behind can actually make you money. Garage sales can be a great source of income. Kids love garage sales, so try to put your old toys and child friendly objects where everyone can see them. Leave the more adult items like books and tools a little further back for them to browse when their kids have drawn them in. Also remember to post signs around your neighbourhood. The more people that know about it, the more money you’ll make. - Remember that one man's rubbish is another man’s treasure. Ebay has worked wonders for those searching for their strange treasures. Post as much as you can on Ebay, you never know who might be looking to buy your stuff, and more to the point how much it might be worth to them. Once you’ve sold your items and made a tidy profit, Compare the Man and Van can help get your items where they’re going for the lowest possible price.. DE-CLUTTER YOUR HOUSE
  4. GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY - Upcycling is a modern phenomenon

that can produce wonderful results for almost no money, you just have to get your hands dirty. - A great starting point is to acquire some wooden pallets, these can either be bought incredibly cheaply or found lying around other building debris pallets are great because they need very little work doing to them. By stacking two or three, attaching trolley wheels to the bottom which can be bought at your local DIY store, and giving the surfaces a good sand and lick of paint, you have a brand new modern coffee table for your home. - Websites like Freecycle have a wealth of furniture absolutely free, all you need is a handy man with a van to go and collect it and help you move it in. Trade Secret, is a website which sells its furniture wholesale, for exactly half the price it runs at high street stores like Laura Ashley or M&S. CRAFTY FURNITURE
  5. GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY - Firstly ensure that any arrears

for gas, electricity and council tax have been handled, and you have arranged payment until the date you move out of the address. Also make sure you cancel any direct debits to these services, as it is not unknown for them to continue to take money long after you have moved. - Once you have cancelled all your prior deals, it’s time to hunt for new ones. Here is where you can save a heap of money. Just like the estate agents, you hold the power. Hunt for the cheapest deals and if one company doesn’t match up, inform them you can find it cheaper elsewhere. New customers are likely to get a much better deal than existing customers, ensure to capitalise on this. ENSURE EVERYONE KNOWS YOU’ RE MOVING OUT
