  1. VISC-1001 Library Guide: Finding Books and Journal Articles This short

guide will demonstrate how to search books and journal articles in Summon, the library website
  2. Summon is the OCAD U Library’s discovery layer located at

ocadu.ca/library.htm. It connects you with books, ebooks, articles, images, streaming video, and more.
  3. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find what we

are looking for. For the VISC-1001 example assignment let’s start simple and search “Akan AND memory AND death” and click “Search”.
  4. Take time to browse search results to find relevant material.

Pay particular attention to brief summaries of results by clicking “More Information.” If a result looks irrelevant move on to the next one. Click for description, list of chapters, and subjects covered
  5. This resource looks like it might be useful since its

title references both African art traditions and rituals. Remember our object is related to funerals which are a type of ritual. Click for more information
  6. By clicking “More Information” we can confirm that this book

will definitely be useful in our paper. Both the Summary and Table of Contents show the ways this book will relate to our object.
  7. The summary tells us the book discusses African art in

its various contexts and we can even see that chapter 4 covers the Akan peoples and their art!
  8. 1. 2,417 results Try not to get overwhelmed by a

large number of results. F on the left will let you filter by item type such as print books, ebooks, or journal articles.
  9. There are also filters for custom date ranges and specific

disciplines. For visual culture before 1800 consider art history or archeology, for example.
  10. Still having trouble finding information about your object? Ask a

librarian in person, by email [email protected], chat ocad.ask.ca.libraryh3lp.com Or by phone 416.977.6000 x 334.
