  1. Educational Philosophy When beginning to understand the way students learn,

we must first realize that every student may learn differently. Teaching with one method for every single topic will not help students learn. Students learn best when they are able to completely understand the material, apply and continue to use it. With this strategy, they will grasp the concept of the material and therefore will be more knowledgeable of the subject. If the students are applying what they have learned to their everyday lives, the material will seem more beneficial and not viewed as something they will never need again. Teachers must have a great understanding of their students to greatly enhance their learning experience. Their understanding of their students will influence what material is taught and how it is taught. Effective teaching stems from great teachers. When teachers combine their knowledge with their students needs to create lessons, learning happens. Effective teaching will have the students learning, but not simply from a book or copying notes off of a power point. Interacting with the students and having the students interact with each other is key. Students will not deeply understand something if there is only onesided interaction happening that is from the teacher to the student. Having the students involved, interacting, and engaged advances the depth of their learning. How we teach will not all be the same, but will be rooted from various pieces of different educational philosophies. A few different styles will fit into how I will teach. First, progressivism will play a role into my teaching style. My students will know that they are individuals; I am not a teacher because I want all of my students to be the perfect A+ students. They will make mistakes, but so will I. The important thing is that we all learn and grow from
  2. our experiences. My teaching style will reflect on the personalities

of my class, how they are progressing, and their lives. The material needs to be relevant to their lives to be effective. This is where pragmatism will also play a role in my teaching style. It only makes sense to have students learn about things that will be practical in their lives. Pragmatism and progressivism will lie hand in hand within my teaching style and play off of one another as I continue to grow as an educator. All students need to know is everything that will be on the test right? Wrong. Do not get me wrong, that information is important, but there is so much more that students need to know. Great teachers will always tell students what they need to know and this can be done by highlighting the objectives or standards of every lesson that is taught. Students also need to know things that one cannot learn from a textbook, such as life lessons. These will be gradually learned through schooling and from great teachers. When it comes time to demonstrate what they have learned, there are so many ways that this could be accomplished. Of course, their knowledge could always be demonstrated by taking a test, but that would become quite exhausting not only for the student, but for the teacher as well. Students can demonstrate what they have learned in a multitude of ways. They can show off their artistic skills by making projects and posters. There are also unlimited resources online that they can use to create something that demonstrates what they have learned. There are countless ways in which one could define success. Students will of course have personal goals. Their success could be dependent on whether they achieve their own goals. Teachers could set up goals within the classroom and success could be measured from that. Every individual will have personal standards set and therefore each have their own definition of
  3. success. If someone achieves their goal, then they have achieved

success. It will not always be the same for everyone; some may need to start with small goals to successfully reach the finish line while others determine their success on the final big picture. No matter what the case, success is not defined by numbers, but can be defined by how someone or a group of people feel(s) after arriving at their goal. There will be a variety of ways in which I will teach my students. I will not always stick to the noteshomeworkquiz routine. Everyday could be something different. I want to explore different methods of teaching the material; my students will never get bored and neither will I. This plan could be plenty of extra work for me, but I will not allow myself to become a teacher that has to have a strict routine with no room for changes. When they are in my classroom, they will know what to expect because we will go over all of the expectations at the beginning of the school year. It will be a place that they will enjoy coming to because they will not always know what to expect. While it is my classroom, it is also theirs and that should be clear. The walls will not only have posters that I have hanging on them, but there will also be students’ projects displayed on the walls. They should be proud of their work because I know I will be too. Within my classroom, there will be a definite area that will be known as my area around my desk. This is not an area for the students to hang out, but for me to keep my necessary teacher and personal items within. Again, my students will know this because we will go over the expectations. My classroom will have a great welcoming feeling to it because I plan on it being colorful. I know I would not be able to sit in a room with bare, solid colored walls and feel comfortable. I want my students to feel that they are in a friendly atmosphere within the
  4. classroom and not only because of the decorations I have

put up, but also because of the projects they have made that are proudly hanging on the wall. There will always be those students that will not take well to me or my teaching style. A great tip that I always tell myself is to adapt and overcome. As an educator, I cannot just give up on a challenging student or a student that does not learn from my teaching style. It is my responsibility to make sure they are learning, so I will learn more about the student to better understand how they learn best. Sometimes talking to them will help work out the differences or help me get a better understanding of where we got off track. When behavior begins to become a problem, I will address the student and reiterate the expectations that had already been clearly explained. From there, the behavior will continue to be monitored with the hope that it improves. After all, it is our job to teach the students we have, not the students we used to have or wish we had, but those that are currently in our classrooms. My success will continuously be reflected on how well my students are doing. I know that not all of my students will grasp concepts the first, second or even fifth time, but when it comes time for the assessment if I have been successful, my students’ work will reflect that. At the end of each summative assessment, I will give my students an opportunity to grade me. This will be their opportunity to let me know how they think I am doing and what they think I can do better on. Students’ input is very important to me because I feel as though if I can learn from them, they will be learning from me too. Also, there are always new topics on education being researched and published so it would be great for me to keep up on new and current events in the education world. As I am doing that, I will be growing my knowledge as an educator. In the classroom, I will always be able to try new ways of teaching as long as I am still teaching my
  5. curriculum. This will give me great opportunities to grow as

an educator. In finding new ways to grow as an educator, I will continue to be an effective practitioner. I will constantly be learning from what I and my students have done and implementing big or little improvements over time.
