  1. tall 亠 top hat + 口 mouth + 冂 hood

+ 口 mouth Two little aliens standing on top of each other, trying to look tall. The one on top is wearing a top hat pulled down so you can only see his mouth; the bottom one is just a mouth under a hood.
  2. capital 亠 top hat + 口 mouth + 小 small

In the capital, men with top hats and big mouths accomplish very little. Or remember the first two elements as the top half of 高 tall: In the capital, tall buildings make people feel very small.
  3. circumference 勹 bound up + 土 soil + 口 mouth

Think of a math problem: What is the circumference of this opening in the ground? If you don’t want to do the math, you’ll have to wrap a measuring tape around the edge of the hole to find out. Element meanings: circumference, lap (e.g. of a track.) Although the first two strokes of circumference look somewhat like 冂 hood, note that the first stroke has an outward curve instead of a vertical stop. You may wish to give this form a new name, measuring tape, to avoid confusion.
  4. week 周 circumference + 辶 road Imagine a road that

lets you travel the circumference of the earth in just one week.
  5. gentleman Don’t confuse this gentleman with 土 soil—a gentleman is

the opposite of dirty. Look at his broad shoulders; he’s like a modern samurai.
  6. good luck 士 gentleman + 口 mouth A true gentleman

will always mouth “good luck” to his opponent before a match.
  7. sell 士 gentleman + 冖 crown + 儿 human legs

A gentleman will never sell his crown, even if you chop off both his legs!
  8. schoolhouse * Contrast this element with 宀 house: this little

schoolhouse has not one chimney, but 1-2-3 (like ABC). Pay attention to the direction of the drops: the first two move from left to right, the last one from right to left.
  9. study schoolhouse + 子 child Where do children study their

ABC’s? In the schoolhouse, of course!
