  1. heavens 一 one + 大 big Think of the heavens,

or the sky, as the biggest ceiling there is. God, the “big one,” lives in the heavens.
  2. spoon * Picture a large ladle or spoon—the vertical portion

is the handle, and the bottom curve and horizontal stroke as the scoop.
  3. north In the north, it is so cold that people

sit back to back to keep warm.
  4. compare 匕 spoon + 匕 spoon Compare these two spoons:

the one on the left is defective! The end is just a hook. Like comparing apples (in spoons) and oranges (also in spoons).
  5. every lying down + 毋 mother Every day, every mother

looks forward to finally lying down. Remember that as an element, mother connects the two drops into one vertical line: 毋
  6. lack lying down + 人 person This kanji, meaning lack,

is also used in ‘yawn’—what you do when you lack sleep. Picture a person yawning; they should remedy that lack of sleep by lying down. We will also use yawn to refer to this kanji when used as an element.
  7. song 可 can + 可 can + 欠 yawn Do

you know the Obama song? It goes “Yes, we can! Yes, we can!” Unfortunately, the lyrics are so repetitive that everyone starts yawning. I wanted to be a can-can dancer, but lacking the ability to dance, I decided to sing a song instead. The audience starts to yawn.
  8. next 冫 ice + 欠 lack It’s such a hot

summer that there is a severe lack of ice. The bored clerk at the store rationing out ice yawns and says “Next,” and the next person in line goes to get their ice cube. If you’re lacking water, ice is the next best thing.
