3. PART ONE LEGEND OF CHINESE YEAR – NIAN （ （ （ （年 年 年 年） ） ） ） & XI （ （ （ （夕 夕 夕 夕） ） ） ）
4. Once upon a time… • There is a cruel beast named Xi. He looks like this.
5. Sometimes Xi looks like this • Once every 365 days, it comes at night to eat people.
6. People were scared of Xi One cay, a brave man showed up and tried to fight Xi His name is Nian
7. Nian used fireworks and firecrackers to make bright lights and loud noises to scare away Xi
8. Xi is very scared of fire and noise
9. Some brave kids also join the fight against Xi
10. The night that people were fighting Xi is now called New Year Eve（除夕）
11. In the end, people won and Xi escaped
12. To scare away the Beast Xi • Traditions • Fireworks and firecrackers are used on New Year Eve throughout the whole night. • Families stay up late together until midnight • People decorate their houses with the color red because it looks like fire and families have new red couplets on all their doors.

14. PART TWO 12 ANIMALS REPRESENT 12 LUNAR YEARS THIS YEAR IS THE YEAR OF SNAKE
15. 12 Animals represent 12 lunar years • There is a cycle of twelve animals to represent twelve lunar years. Then the cycle repeats. • Rat, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig
17. 今 年 是 蛇 年 This year is the year of Snake
18. Snake says: It is my year! I will bring your good fortune!
19. PART THREE FIRECRACKERS AND FIREWORKS IN CHINESE NEW YEAR
20. • Kids say: “I like to play with fireworks”. • Adults say: “You have to play with me”.
21. Fireworks are also performed by local government or businesses.
22. The fireworks are so beautiful to watch!
23. • Kids always say: “I want more fireworks and firecrackers, I just love them!”
24. Yes, I enjoy playing with firecrackers!
25. It is really fun, they makes loud, nice, happy, noises.
26. Look, my whole family is involved in playing firecrackers on Chinese New Year
27. Yes, I can also play with firecrackers at night under the moon! Is that fun?
28. This is the place I can buy firecrackers and fireworks. Will they be sold out? No worry, there are a lot of stores like this!
29. Besides firecrackers and fireworks, there are some other fun things for kids.

41. PART FIVE NEW YEAR FOODS / BIG FEAST – BEST FOOD OF THE YEAR
42. • You know, there are so many New Year food choices. I do not really know which one I really like.
43. Northern Chinese like to eat dumpling, I also like it.
44. Sometimes we eat at home And sometimes we go to a restaurant
45. Yes, restaurants are always very crowded on the eve of Chinese New Year!
46. PART SIX CELEBRATION LASTS UNTIL JAN 15 LION\DRAGON DANCE
47. This is one of my favorite events: Lion and dragon dancing during the festival
48. I like to watch the Lion dancing!

55. PART EIGHT NEW YEAR FORTUNE RED ENVELOP -HONG BAO
56. In the new year eve, kids receive Hong Bao from their parents and relatives
57. Kids are always happy to have Hong Bao and then count their money.
58. At the first day of work after new year, workers used to get a Hong Bao from their employer
59. Everybody is happy to have Hong Bao.
