Transforming IT Culture: An Introduction to DevOps

Slides for the talk I gave at the 2016 University of Wisconsin - Madison Information & Technology Leadership Conference. Without the talk (which was not recorded), the slides are less helpful, save for the last slide with resources.

  1. • What is DevOps? • Trends in the community •

What a DevOps culture could mean for UW • Where do we go next? • Questions/discussion
  2. 2001: The Agile Manifesto We are uncovering better ways of

developing software by doing it and helping others do it. Through this work we have come to value: Individuals and interactions over processes and tools Working software over comprehensive documentation Customer collaboration over contract negotiation Responding to change over following a plan That is, while there is value in the items on the right, we value the items on the left more.
  3. A key goal of a DevOps culture is to develop

empathy, so we can’t talk about it without talking about diversity.
  4. DevOps can be defined as a culture in which the

needs of the organization are considered holistically, where all units work together to actively enable other units, and where units work to continuously improve themselves for the good of their colleagues and the organization.
  5. “Organizations which design systems ... are constrained to produce designs

which are copies of the communication structures of these organizations” (Conway’s Law)
