Students can obtain credit for approved biology-related research experiences in research labs across the University of Hawai‘i system, and with organizations throughout the Hawaiian island.   17. MICROBIOLOGY Microbiology deals with all aspects of microscopic forms of

    life. The field is diverse, and includes the classification of microorganisms, and their interactions, both favorable and unfavorable, with other organisms and the environment. Microbiology also deals with the physiology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and uses of microorganisms. • Some microbes clean the environment by degrading spilled hydrocarbons, or making toxins safe. Others enhance pollutant toxicity, or degrade human infrastructure • Advances in DNA-based technologies have come from studying viruses, bacteria, and yeasts. Microbes are crucial to our knowledge of metabolism, genes, evolution, and other biological processes. • Thousands of microbial species are helpful or harmless.
