Rewriting the African Story (#ThinkAgain) Matt Adesanya @ ForLoop PH
Who am I?
(does it matter?) nothing
Disclaimer
The title notwithstanding, This presentation has no connotation of Racism
OR BLM OR Favoritism OR Preference for one race over the other
Attention!
‘African’ in the title is neither the continent, OR the
group of people living on this land, it’s referring to ‘You!’ You are known as an African
Getting Started
In order to find YOU! We’ll tell our Story from
the Continent’s Point of View
Where are we now?
Economic BackWater!
Always Catching Up with the Rest of the World
Pitied by others
TANSTAAFL (There ain't no such thing as a free lunch)
Our Current Problems
Little OR Nil Development
Unemployment
Trickling Youths involvement in Government
Dysfunctional Institutions
Corruption Like Cankerworm
Poverty
Blind, Hungry, Angry Youths
How did we get here?
Slave Trade
West Africa most affected by the Slave Trade
Betrayed by Fellow Africans
Colonization
Never Truly Independent
Our Parents didn’t help
Who do we blame?
The White Man
Our Leaders/Past Heroes
Our Institutions
Our Parents
God
What are we doing about it?
We talk
We joke and circulate memes
We insult authorities
We insult our leaders
We forget easily
We argue
We don’t listen
We are angry
We riot
We destroy
We divide
We label ourselves
We make simple things appear complex (Analysis Paralysis)
We are proud, cocky and puffed up
We protest
We entertain ourselves
We watch television
Our phone(s) become our closest companion
We peddle fake news
We fight and take it by Force
We Hustle to Survive
We look for favour at the expense of others
We cheat our way up.
We hate those better than us for no reason
We steal and hoard (money, knowledge) for the future we
are not sure of
We hate the people we blame
We love our own more than others
We Flee
What if we think again?
What can we do differently?
Let’s start by thinking of Africans who are different? Our
Favourite heroes
There are so many of them than we can list
here…. (not in any particular order)
These are my favourite heroes, you can make your list
as well.
Iyinoluwa Aboyeji (Co-founder - Andela)
Mark Essien (Founder - hotels.ng)
Jason Njoku (Founder - irokotv)
Seny Sulyman (Country Director, Andela Nigeria)
Joshua Mwaniki (Country Director, Andela Kenya)
Wambui Kinya (Lead Strategist, Andela)
Kemi Adetiba (Movie producer)
Pastor ‘Poju Oyemade (Convener - The Platform)
Leke Alder (Founder - Alder Consulting)
Kunle Afolayan (Movie Producer)
Pastor Sam Adeyemi (Leadership Coach)
Moyinoluwa Adeyemi (Android Programmer)
John Adesanya (Animator)
Brice Nkengsa (Director of Engineering, Andela)
Nadayar Enegesi (Director of Learning, Andela)
Prosper Otemuyiwa (Developer Evangelist)
Temiloluwa Abikoye (Medical Doctor - LUTH)
Ridwan Olalere (Founder - forloop)
Chris Nwamba (Writer @ Scotch.io)
Ebun Omoni (Director of Products, Andela)
Bukunmi Adesanya (Auditor @ PWC)
Barrack Obama (44th POTUS)
Nathaniel Bassey (Singer & Songwriter)
Nengi Adoki (Singer & Actress)
Abiola Ibrahim (Top Go programmer)
Suliat Ogunlende (Director of Success, Andela Nigeria)
We end the list for now :)
What do all these heroes have in common?
Recall our list of what the African is doing about
his/her problems?
Talk, blame, anger, labelling, argue, fight, protest, riot, divide, flee…
You recall?
Heroes do the opposites of these
Instead of Talking... They DO and ACT
Instead of Blaming... They take responsibility
Instead of Arguing... They listen and have intellectual discourse
Instead of Ridiculing others... They correct in love
Instead of Labeling... They see each other as one
Instead of Surviving... They Thrive
Instead of Hoarding... They teach, give freely and share
Instead of hating... They forgive quickly and love.
Instead of competition... They collaborate.
Instead of cheating... They learn to fail and try to
again.
Instead of protesting... They get to work
Instead of pride... They are humble. They see themselves as
nothing
Heroes obey the authorities, even when the authorities hurt them.
Heroes don’t insult their leaders, they pray for them.
Heroes respect their parents and every elderly.
Heroes don’t chase the PAST, they invent the FUTURE, TODAY.
Instead of fleeing….
Heroes come home
Solution
Now, what is the solution to the African problem? How
can everyone win together?
Shall we pause to think for a sec?
Sorry to burst your bubbles.
The problem is not the continent or the Land
The problem is not our leaders
The problem is not the white man
The problem is not your parents
The problem is not God
The problem is YOU!
Yes! YOU, YOU and YOU, and YOU going through the
slides
Go back to the beginning of this presentation, thinking of
yourself while you read.
Let’s take another short break to think.
There’s something to learn here.
Can you see it?
That you are the one in the Economic backwater,
You are the one chasing the rest of the world
You are the one being pitied by others
You are the one feeding on crumbs
Your current problems are….
Little or no development
You are unemployed
You are not interested in politics and servant leadership
You wallow in poverty
You are hustling to survive
You are blind, hungry and angry?
How did you get here?
You think like a slave
You refuse to accept that the past is read-only memory
You refuse to see in the NOW!
You are always stressed and worried?
You are afraid of failing
You talk
You joke and circulate memes
You insult authorities
You insult your leaders
You forget easily
You argue
You don’t listen
You are angry
You riot
You destroy
You divide
You label yourself
You make simple things appear complex
You are proud, cocky and puffed up
You protest
You entertain yourself
You watch television
Your phone(s) become your closest companion
You peddle fake news
You fight and take it by Force
You Hustle to Survive
You look for favour at the expense of others
You cheat our way up.
You hate those better than you for no reason
You steal and hoard (money, knowledge) for the future you
are not sure of
You hate the people you blame
We love your own more than others
You Flee
You are afraid of failing
The Truth is ...
You stand alone in this world
Stop roping other people in
YOU are a NATION
YOU are AFRICA
YOU are the WORLD
NOT “WE are the WORLD”
What are you going to do about YOU?
Find yourself. Think Again
Consider these questions
Question 1: If someone agrees to pay your dream money
every day, without working for them, what will you do with the rest of your life?
Question 2: If all your EVERY daily needs are met
by someone, but you don’t work for them and you won’t need to hold as little as 1 cent in hand, will you be satisfied?
Question 3: What drives your life? What motivates you?
Think Again
If you can answer these questions, then you are ...
Getting Started again.
You must find your purpose and a platform.
Perhaps, we could have something better than democracy, starting in
Africa
Perhaps, we can reform our institutions - medical, legal, education.
Something that works for us
Perhaps, we can solve the African problems the African way
- #Original
Perhaps, we can solve the African problems the African way
- #Original
Here are other solutions I’ll suggest besides finding yourself
Learn how to Learn
Study
You cannot LEAD effectively if you don’t READ
Slow down on Videos and Audios, READ!
Serve first before Leading Consider this Dirty Talk going forward:
“I don’t want to work for anybody” Swallow your pride. Serve.
When you lead, be a servant leader
Sit at the back and be humble - genuinely
Find a mentor
It’s way easier to learn when someone holds your hand,
to lead you.
No amount of studying equates apprenticeship.
Enough of hearing and talking.
DO!
CAUTION!
On my list of heroes, I had really known people
and others not as popular
On my list of heroes, I had really known people
and others not as popular
That I know lead meaningfully everyday
That are honest and sincere, and add value to humanity
There’s the 44th POTUS, colleagues at work, pastors, movie directors,
some are friends in the community, childhood friend, my younger brother and my wife.
A hero is not necessarily a far away person known
everywhere.
A hero is someone who’s discovered themselves and are living
it everyday.
Heroes are NOT concerned about HAVING and having, they are
concerned about BEING - they live for the NOW!
Heroes are NOT selfless. They collaborate.
Heroes listen.
Ask a hero to be your mentor
If you certain you are a HERO, having the qualities
described of heroes, kindly mentor someone today.
Dear Heroes, Carry your candle. Run to the darkness. Be
our firelight.
None
Light your candle. Light up Africa Dear Sleeping Giants
That way, we can have more candles
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our
deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world. There is
nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. .
We are all meant to shine, as children do. We
were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
If heroes head our politics, organisations and institutions. Africa will
be better for it.
We are raising heroes at where I work as a
Lead Software Engineer - Andela
100,000 in 10 years
The largest percentage of the Heroes on my list, work
with Andela.
We need more Andelas in Africa.
I enjoin everyone to find out how we are doing
it @ www.andela.com
I enjoin everyone to find out how we are doing
it.
Dear heroes, get started.
Start by mentoring only 3.
3 will mentor 9. 9 will mentor 27. 27 will
mentor 81.
This is how we will raise more heroes.
This is how we will rewrite YOUR story and my
story - the African Story.
But I offer an ultimate way - in fact the
right way and the only way
Follow the Son of God - Jesus!
Give up everything that you hold dear to you.
Stop looking inward, outward and downward, look upward. (John 3:14
- 16)
Give up religion, family, your money, everything.
REPENT, and be baptized, every one of you in the
name of Jesus, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 10:38)
You will have to do everything Jesus did - “Go
ye into all the world, and ...
Preach the gospel to every creature
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but
he that believeth not shall be damned
These signs shall follow them that believe...
In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall
speak with new tongues
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any
deadly thing, it shall not hurt them
They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall
recover
Leave Egypt, leave the world, leave everything, and follow the
Son
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
