The History of Google – This is one of my favorite reading lessons because I can use it with business students, adults and kids- it’s a hit with all of them. Students will have the opportunity to read, speak and learn about the history of a search engine most of us use everyday.

6. relevant: related to a particular subject software: a computer program ranking: how good or bad something is – ‘ranked 1st’ means the very best 1 What is a search engine? A search engine is a program that looks for things on the internet. Any user (a person using a computer linked to the internet) can type words into a search engine. The search engine will find webpages which are relevant1 to the user’s ‘keywords’. A search engine has several parts: • spider software2 that ‘crawls’ the Internet, looking at websites • a database, to store the information that the spider software finds • algorithms (instructions to a computer) that judge or ‘rank’3 websites, based on the user’s keywords 5 10 15 2 3 © 2014-2021 Global Online Language Services Inc. 6
7. Where did the name Google come from? Google is the world’s most popular search engine. It was invented by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Google was named after a ‘googol’. This is the name for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name ‘Google’ shows the huge amount of information that a search engine has to look at. 5 © 2014-2021 Global Online Language Services Inc. 7
8. a graduate student: someone studying for an advanced university degree, such as a Masters or Doctorate campus: the buildings of a university or school a network: a group of computers which are connected to each other 4 Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and BackRub In 1995, Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University in California. They were graduate students4 in computer science. Larry was a new student, and the university asked Sergey to show him around the campus5. In January of 1996, the pair began writing a program for a search engine which they called BackRub. BackRub received many good reviews from computer users. This excited Larry and Sergey. They then began working on Google. They worked in their dorm rooms. The pair built a network6 using cheap, used, and borrowed computers. They needed a lot of computer power, which came in the form of disks. They spent all their money buying disks as cheaply as they could. After a short demo8 of Google he said, "Instead of us discussing all the details, why don't I just write you a check9?" He gave Google a check for $100,000. Larry Page and Sergey Brin incorporated10 the company within two weeks. 10. Google Grows In September of 1998, Google Inc. opened an office in California’s ‘Silicon Valley’12. The website ‘Google.com’ began as a search engine. In those days, it was answering 10,000 searches every day. In June 2000, Google became the world’s largest search engine. In June 2006, the Oxford English Dictionary added “Google” as a verb. In August 2004, Google went onto the stock market13 at $85 per share. Google raised $1.67 billion when it went public14. In May 2011, over 1 billion visitors visited the Google website. Google is the most visited website in the world.
