  2. What is Hate Speech Hate speech can be understood as

    any kind of communication in speech, writing or behaviour, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, colour, descent, gender or other identity factor. Most of the time, hate speech can occur based on stereotyping of community groups. $#@!&&%^@**^!*%@**!&%!!^#@^*
  3. Hate Speech is NOT Free Speech! Although it is not

    formally defined, any type of communication that is intentionally causing harm or distress while dehumanizing a person or a group, should not be deemed as responsible use of Free Speech. No one should be under the impression that Free Speech is not exhaustive or carries no repercussion.

    Identify both definite and broad characteristics as well as its short-term and long-term impact
  5. Online Hate Speech Characteristics & Impact • Every single platform

    - posts, comments, messages, images, texts, videos… • Based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, political preference, appearance, behaviours • Dehumanizing, demoralizing and harming • Could be systematically developed narratives or based on personal experience/ stereotypes • Questions someone’s place in the society • Intentional and targeted, Personal and direct • Expect you to react and pay attention
  6. As a Global Citizen, should we condone hate speech? Analyse

    under the Cognitive, Socio-emotional and Behavioral domains
  7. What You Can Do, Starting Today! • Practice to spot

    and identify hate speech correctly via adopting relevant tools and techniques. (Ex - Rabat Action Plan) • Think first. React second. Be critical. • Do not give unnecessary attention. • Report! • Condemn impunity against hate crimes. Advocate action against hate speech. • Make awareness. Promote social, cultural and religious sensitivity/ understanding. • Develop counter narratives. • Support those in need of assistance. (Ex - Sri Lanka Police - Cybercrime Unit, Internet Crime Complaint Centre, Grassrooted Trust, Women In Need (WIN))
