I kicked off the first day of .Astronomy 8 in Pembroke College, Oxford with a logistical welcome and a reminder that #dotastro in essence is focussed on the community that supports it.

  2. #dotastro Scheduled  talks    -­‐  invited  talks,  there  to  inspire

     and  promote   discussion  between  participants.   Unconference  sessions  -­‐  this  part  of  the  day  is  not  scheduled  and  is   down  to  you.  Topics  of  sessions  can  be  anything  you  would  like  to   discuss  with  the  people  here.     Lightning  talks  -­‐  can  be  given  by  any  participant,  prepared  or   spontaneous  -­‐  they  are  strictly  3  minutes  and  a  single  slide  and  can  be   on  anything.     Hack  day  -­‐  collaborative  building  of  online  tools,  apps,  games,   documents,  videos  etc.  that  will  benefit  the  astronomy  community.   http://wiki.dotastronomy.com  
  3. Code  of  Conduct   The  .Astronomy  community  is  made  up

     of  members  from  around  the  globe  with  a  diverse  set  of  skills,  personaliTes,  and   experiences.  It  is  these  differences  that  make  .Astronomy  so  successful,  and  which  provide  the  unique  experience  our   conferences  provide.  We  expect  everyone  in  the  community  to  follow  these  guidelines.  Our  goal  is  to  keep  ours  a  posiTve,   inclusive,  successful  and  growing  community.   As  members  of  the  community  and  aWendees  at  .Astronomy  conferences:   -­‐  We  pledge  to  treat  all  people  with  respect  and  provide  an  environment  free  of  harassment  and  bullying,  regardless  of  sex,   sexual  orientaTon,  gender  idenTty,  disability,  physical  appearance,  body  size,  race,  naTonality,  ethnicity  and  religion.  In   parTcular,  sexual  language  and  imagery,  sexist,  racist  or  otherwise  exclusionary  jokes  are  not  appropriate.   -­‐  We  pledge  to  welcome  all  those  interested  in  parTcipaTng  in  .Astronomy,  and  realise  that  including  people  with  a  variety  of   opinions  and  backgrounds  will  only  serve  to  enrich  our  community.  Discussions  relaTng  to  the  merits  of  various  technologies,   programming  languages  and  so  on  are  part  of  our  remit,  but  need  to  be  carried  out  with  respect,  taking  proacTve  measures  to   ensure  that  all  parTcipants  are  heard  and  feel  confident  that  they  can  freely  express  their  opinions.     -­‐  We  pledge  to  welcome  quesTons  and  answer  them  respec\ully,  paying  parTcular  aWenTon  to  those  new  to  the  community.  As   .Astronomy  conTnues  to  evolve,  we  need  input  from  newcomers,  and  each  conference  strives  to  include  parTcipants  who  have   not  been  to  .Astronomy  before.   -­‐  We  pledge  to  be  conscienTous  of  the  percepTons  of  the  wide  community,  and  to  respond  to  criTcism  respec\ully.  We  will   strive  to  model  behaviours  that  encourage  producTve  debate  and  disagreement,  both  within  our  community  and  where  we  are   criTcised.     -­‐  We  will  take  acTons  when  members  of  our  community  violate  this  code.  Incidents  at  a  conference  should  be  reported  to  one   of  the  LOC,  or  by  email  to  [email protected].     This  code  of  conduct  is  heavily  based  on  the  astropy  code,  which  itself  was  adopted  from  the  PSF  code  of  conduct.  It  is  licensed   under  a  CreaTve  Commons  AWribuTon  4.0  InternaTonal  License.   hWp://Tnyurl.com/dotastrococ
