The Genesis Framework Meets the Block Editor

The Genesis Framework Meets the Block Editor

The [new] block editor, introduced in WordPress 5.0, has changed how the Genesis Framework encourages developers to build sites and create child themes. Instead of confusing widget based home pages, create a completely fluid front page using the block editor and use that! Theme developers can release themes with pages and menus preconfigured, added to the site with one click during the theme install.

  1. ▪What is the Genesis Framework? ▪How has Genesis historically solved

the problems of creating fancy looking websites? ▪What’s changing because of the new block editor?
  2. What is Genesis? Genesis is a theme which is meant

to be used in partnership with another theme. So we call it a “framework”, rather than a parent theme, because the traditional parent/child theme relationship doesn’t apply here.
  3. So, How Do You Build a Fancy Looking Website? Let’s

posit that for the average site, most fanciness is restricted to the front page and possibly landing pages.
  4. What About Content? ▪ Many themes do not include any

kind of demo content. ▪ Those which do, might include an XML file which you can import using the WordPress import tool. ▪ The import tool kind of blows chunks. Missing posts, orphaned attachments, and missing content types are all issues. ▪ And if you have a lot of widgets in play, none of them will be imported.
  5. One-Click Theme Setup to the Rescue “Building your own theme

or installing a new theme? Theme authors can define—and sites can load—demo content, plugins, and perfectly-designed Gutenberg blocks onto the home page of a new site using that theme automatically and in a matter of minutes!”
  6. Block Suites ▪ Atomic Blocks ▪ CoBlocks ▪ Kadence Blocks

    ▪ Ultimate Blocks for Gutenberg ▪ Ghost Kit ▪ Premium Blocks for Gutenberg ▪ Otter Blocks ▪ Advanced Gutenberg ▪ Advanced Gutenberg Blocks
