The Situation... • Increasing number of international students in the Swanson School, mostly Chinese o SSoE and Sichuan University opening joint Engineering Institute in fall 2014 in Sichuan • Orientations for Civil and Mechanical Engineering→seeing confused faces and getting no questions • How can we help international students more fully comprehend basic research concepts?

The Partnership... • Chinese librarians from the East Asian Library at Pitt • Co-teach departmental orientations and Technical Writing for International Engineering Students course o Combination of English and Chinese o Actively encourage questions and conversation o Deeper explanation of concepts like plagiarism
