    faculty research grants • Provide scholarships to encourage students to excel in their studies • Remove barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields • Encourage students to become active role models and leaders in their community
  3. Anita Borg Scholarship Overview 2004: Created Google Anita Borg Memorial

    Scholarship 2007: Launched Scholarship in Europe & Israel 2008: Expanded Scholarship to include Russia 2009: Expanded Scholarship to include the Middle East and Africa
  4. The Scholarship Award: • 7000 Euro (or equivalent) to be

    used toward tuition, books, travel conferences, etc. • Part of a Google community of women in technology • Invitation to attend a retreat in a European Google office • Participate in a one-year Google development program • Google ambassador for outreach activity in local community
  5. The Scholarship Eligibility: • Female students • Pursuing Bachelors, Masters,

    or PhD • Study Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, Applied Mathematics, or closely related fields for 2015-2016 academic year • Intent to be enrolled to Bachelors, Masters or PhD program for 2016-2017 academic year at any university at Europe, Middle East and Africa
  6. The Scholarship Google choose scholars with the closed criterias, but

    there is main items: • Good academic performance • Leadership experience • Demonstrated passion for Computer Science Only 20 best applications will receive the scholarship

  11. CV Tips & Tricks • Keep it short -- Clear

    and concise resume which highlights your accomplishments • One page - Bachelors student or those with little work experience • Two pages -- if you have significant accomplishments (publications, open source contributions, startups, awards, etc.) • Check for spelling and grammar

    • Include awards and competitions • Provide detail on accomplishments Candidate A – Wrote several applications to improve efficiency within the finance group. Candidate B – Used Java and PHP to write financial accounting application that saved the company over 25 hours a week of productivity resulting in over $100K in savings.
  13. Essay #1 • Imagine that as an Anita Borg scholar,

    you are given the opportunity to give a 5 minute speech to a group of high school students to encourage them to pursue degrees in Computer Science. • Remember, the students want to know what is exciting and interesting about the field. • Please prepare a speech to give to the students. (300-500 words)

    ◦ What about Computer Science interests you in general? ◦ Why did you choose to study Computer Science? ◦ What do you think excites high school students about Co Science? • Determine the crowd you are presenting to -- age, boys, girls, both genders • Consider the parts of a speech ◦ Introduction ◦ Main points ◦ Conclusion • Interweave personal story to make it memorable
  15. Essay #2 Technical project or on a piece of research

    where your contribution and involvement was key to its success. Include the following sections: ◦ Problem trying to solve ◦ Solution chosen ◦ Technical challenges faced ◦ Your contribution to the success of the project ◦ Why you consider this project successful or innovative or both.
  16. Essay #2 - Continued Note: Treat this essay as a

    technical report or research paper. Feel free to use tables, references, or figures. (400-600 words)
  17. Essay #3 • Please provide 1-2 examples of a time

    when you exhibited leadership. • Explain what you were trying to achieve and how you were influential. • Feel free to examine the ways in which you acted as a role model to the members of your broader community, your technical community, or your university. (400-600 words)

    2020" initiative, so that women earning computing degrees would be 50% of the graduates by year 2020. • The percentage of Computer Science degrees earned by women, however, is still far from 50% in most countries. • Please write a 600 - 1000 word essay which includes the following sections:
