  1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  2.  Genre  Mise en scene  Camera techniques 

Editing, representation  Audience  Choice of character  What did you not use from other products  How does your product use codes and conventions that enable the audience to easily identify the genre  How have you used or dismissed the ideas that andrew goodwin puts forward
  3. Real Media Products Used  Before creating our actual music

video, we analysed three existing music videos in the pop genre in order to gain an understanding of the features we need to include in our own product. These were:  Ellie Goulding – Love Me Like You Do  John Legend – All Of Me  Sam Smith – Stay With Me
  4. Selena Gomez The Heart Wants What It Wants Ellie Goulding

Love Me Like You Do Music Video  We decided upon doing our music video on a Selena Gomez’s song, which is in the pop genre therefore we had to analyse similar products. The first analysis we chose to do was of an Ellie Goulding song. This had elements that were comparable to our chosen track. For instance, it was mainly about love, it consisted of a minimal amount of characters (2/3), the artist was included in the video, it used different forms of lighting, had more than one setting and there were happy and sad moments presented throughout. Therefore we took these factor into consideration when producing our music video. However there were factors that we did not take into account, such as the fast pace of transitions from one shot to another, the actors dancing with each other to a planned routine, and we did not use dark scenes or film at night due to the low level of quality. Ellie Goulding’s music video was beneficial to our understanding, because it helped us identify the requirements and appealing factors of a typical pop video within the music industry, to its given audience (teenagers).
  5. Selena Gomez The Heart Wants What It Wants John Legend

All Of Me Music Video  The next media product that we analysed was a song produced by a pop artist known as John Legend. This is a slow song that expresses the individuals love for his partner. When looking at our video in comparison to the artists, we found a range of similar features. Firstly, they both use black and white footage for effect, and to provide emphasis on the narrative, the pace of the music is slow in order for the audience to clearly understand the lyrics and meaning behind the video, and a two shot has been used throughout to illustrate the strong bond between the couple. Additionally, half of the footage was filmed outside, and the rest inside, which suggests that more than one location/ environment was used for greater understanding, however there was not a range of them which would have confused the audience. The individuals did not act simply for the camera, they portrayed their true love that they share for each other in reality. The only factor that differs from our music video is that John Legend included sexual scenes, where the couple was open about their relationship. The reason why ours did not have this feature is due to our target audience who are teenagers, therefore we believed it would not be appropriate to display these type of scenes.
  6. Selena Gomez The Heart Wants What It Wants Sam Smith

Stay With Me Music Video  The final media product that we examined for our music video was Stay With Me by Sam Smith. Out of all the three videos, we found that this one had the least similarities and the majority of differences. The only comparisons that we could make were that they both used mid shots to show the artists expressions, whilst being able to see the background and setting that they are situated in, there was a lot of footage whereby the artist was singing at the camera, and the music was of a slow, calm pace allowing the audience to fully understand the purpose of the video and meaning behind it. The differences that we found were that Sam Smith’s version used a variety of actors in order to make the narrative more realistic, the video begins with the public that are on the street rather than focusing on the artist themselves and he utilizes a range of locations (street, home, hall) which can be seen as confusing for the audience as they may find it difficult to understand the representation and reason why a particular setting has been used. Furthermore, a choir is used within the video, which illustrates that there were a range of voices and tones used within Sam Smith’s song. We did not use this feature as we believed it was difficult to access, and we wanted to emphasize the artist as an individual with her own voice. This song expresses the artists feeling about the person he loves, however it is clear that the girl who he is talking about is a hidden secret, therefore he may not wish to expose her identity.
  7. Real Media Products Used  Before creating both of our

ancillary products, we researched existing products, that could give us inspiration, and an idea as to what features we may need to include in our CD cover and magazine advertisement, in order for it to be of the best standard/ quality possible. These included:
  8. Anna Lee Justin Timberlake Digipak  Before creating our CD

cover we researched a few existing products, however the main one that we just was Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience cover. In relation to our digipak, this product has a variety of similarities and a couple of differences. Firstly, it uses the artist on the front cover, making it easier for the audience to recognize the album, however he is hiding parts of his face (eyes), which could imply that the songs are personal, and may have information which he may not which to disclose. Also, the cover consists of the album title, and the artists initials, which is similar to our product, allowing users to be able to identify the individual and his music easily. Another similarity that we found was that Justin Timberlake has added his record company, copyright declaration, barcode and list of songs on the back of his cover. This is beneficial as it enables the audience to gain a feel for the album, allowing them to make the decision whether to purchase it or not. The text is clear and simple to read, and is positioned according to the spacing on the page. The differences that we found within this product was that the artist is displayed in a close up shot, whereas on our cover we have used a mid shot to illustrate the setting to enhance the continuity between products; and our CD cover is produced in colour rather than a black and white effect, which emphasizes the mood and natural feeling of the album and songs it consists of. Justin Timberlake’s cover has enabled us to gain an insight to the elements that pop artists tend to include in their products in order for them to be successful.
  9. Anna Lee Katy Perry Advert  For our magazine advertisement

we used Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed a Girl’ poster as an example to analyze, and found that it related significantly to our product. The main reason for this was that it goes against the typical, portrait stereotype as it is landscape. Artists do this to represent the location/ setting, whilst focusing on the individual themselves. Similar to our advert, this includes the singers name, album title and the hashtag, which illustrates it is a product that refers to modern society. Although, it does use more text in comparison to our product, due to the fact that it has the release date, and the number one most proffered song. The reason why we did not include a lot of text is that it can be seen as distracting the audience from the main feature (artist). Additionally, the text stands out from the background, allowing viewers to easily read it, and the individuals name has a white outline, making it stand out and catch the audiences attention. The only difference that we found was that within the poster there is another image of the actual album, which can confuse individuals , as there is a range of concepts within one product. Finally, we did not include the release date because we wanted the audience to be surprised when the product is announced, which will lead to greater levels of hype being generated once the advert is released. This product, was very useful in directing us with the features we need to include in our ancillary task, and has the most similarities to our advertisement.
