  1. Blogging, Books, Talk, and TV Which is for You? By

    Ryan Newhouse @MTBeerFinder #MTBREWPASSPORT
  2. What I’ll Cover Today • PROS and CONS of 4

Different Media Outlets (speaking from personal experience) • Blogging • Book Writing • Talk (Radio/Podcast) • Television (Look ma, I’m on TV) • Hopefully Balanced • Not too happy • Not too dismal • And you might sing a little
  3. Beer Blogging A self-published, online media outlet with little to

no editorial oversight. Not owned by a company, brewery, distributor, or retailer. It’s independent. It’s yours.
  4. The Pros of Blogging • You can start today (but

wait until I’m done, please) • You can write what you want • Provides timely relevant information • It’s your vision and brand
  5. The Cons of Blogging • Takes time to establish an

audience • Takes even longer to monetize (CPM) • Easy to neglect • It’s always more work than you think
  6. The Takeaway If you want to blog, write at least

6-10 posts before you launch. Then post on a regular schedule. Have a focus, maybe even a 60/40 rule. Create an editorial calendar, and consider collaborating with each person focusing on a different niche. Love, love, love social media. You’re going to need it.
  7. Writing a Book For the purpose of this presentation, I

mean writing a book via a publishing house. Self-publishing and e-books are options, but have more similarities to a blog.
  8. The Pros of Writing a Book • A book has

permanence • It establishes you as a ”professional” writer • It encourages you to dive deeper into your topic than a blog post or article • It makes your mom proud
  9. The Cons of Writing a Book • It will take

months, perhaps years • Ain’t gonna get rich • Depending on the publisher, you buy most of your own books, even for book signings • No do-overs or additions
  10. The Takeaway If you are fortunate enough to pitch a

successful book, or be asked to write a book, congratulations! Get everything in writing and have a lawyer look it over. Don’t be afraid to negotiate terms, even if it’s your first book.
  11. Talkaty-Talk-Talk My experience was a weekly, half-hour radio program, locally

aired. Many principles here will apply to podcasts, but those really are different. You have to enunciate. Try this one: “I want to be a juror on a rural brewery robbery case.” We all have a face for radio!
  12. The Pros of Radio/Podcast • Literally giving your passion for

beer a voice • It thrives in the Here and Now • You never quite know what your guests will say • You can reach a very large audience
  13. The Cons of Radio/Podcast • Money, money, money • Dependent

on guests’ schedules • (Podcasts) Paying for hosting and it is competitive • Radio is a cutthroat business, like for realz!
  14. The Takeaway There’s nothing like it! For homework, have your

friends close their eyes and describe how a beer looks and tastes. Get funding in place before you start, have signed contracts if you partner with a radio group. Always be ready to record an interview.
  15. Television A TV show about beer can air locally, regionally,

nationally, and/or internationally. My experience is with a produced show, not YouTube. It takes a village of Village People.
  16. The Pros of TV • It’s a whole new world!

    • Bigger production, bigger pay day • With extensions, like YouTube, you can reach millions • It’s a service. Many breweries can’t afford TV advertising
  17. The Cons of TV • Money, money, money • It’s

not really a side project anymore. Travel and shoots can be all day, or days • You ask a lot of the breweries • Did I mention it’s expensive?
  18. The Takeaway If you ever get the opportunity to talk

beer on TV, please do it, even if for personal growth only! Trust everyone’s role in the production. Don’t be everything to everyone. Just be you! TV is a unique experience, allowing you to travel and interact with awesome people.
  19. In Closing Blogging is… A lot of work, but it’s

yours. Writing a book is… A lot of work, but it’s forever, which is a really long time. Radio is… A lot of work, but it’s your voice. TV is… A lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun!
