These servers accumulate large amounts of data which are written to server logs daily -- eventually causing the disk to fill up and the web servers to crash. Identifies a Problem The operations team were constantly getting called in the middle of the night to rescue the websites which would go down when the disk became full. Although it is easy to just delete all the log files, this was not an option since the logs were used by the marketing team for analytics and by web admins to investigate problems and performance tuning.

Any logs older than a certain number of days were then transferred to a centralized repository, within the network, where the marketing and admin teams could easily access the logs when needed. Figures out the Cause Another set of similar jobs were created to manage the files in the centralized repository. Files older than the required retention period are deleted so that the repository didn’t consume all of the disk space.
