SCRS: Repair Driven Education: Glue Pull Repair

Chris and Gene gave a seminar on Glue Pull Repair as a part of the Repair Driven Education that the SCRS is responsible for putting together. It was a great opportunity for us to show the collision industry what the power of GPR can do for shops today.

  1. IN THE BEGINNING, COLLISIONS • The world's first automobile accident

occurred in Ohio City, Ohio in 1891. • James William Lambert was involved in the first automobile accident in American history. The accident occurred in Ohio City, Ohio. Lambert's vehicle, the first single-cylinder gasoline automobile, which was carrying Lambert and James Swoveland, hit a tree root, causing the car to careen out of control and smash into a hitching post. Injuries from this accident were minor.
  2. COLLISION RATE REDUCTION • 1917 – Detroit (City) – 65,000

    cars on the road – 7,171 accidents – 168 fatalities (3/4 of the victims were pedestrians) – 11% accident rate, .25% fatality rate • 2017 – Michigan (State) – 3,200,000 cars on the road – 314,921 accidents – 1028 fatalities – 1% accident rate, .03% fatality rate. HOW?
  3. SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS AREN’T FREE • Forward Collision Warning Systems •

Front & Side Airbags • Adaptive Cruise Control • Lane Departure Warning • Blind Spot Detection • Rear View & 360 view cameras
  4. INDUSTRY COST DRIVERS • Increase cost of labor through required

training • Increase cost of labor through required procedure • Increase cost of required equipment • Increase cost of parts • Increase cost of doing business through liability
  5. Do Less Work – Less R&I – Less Parts Replacement

    – Less Filling with Bondo – Less replacement of Ecoat – Less Painting
  6. Do Less Harm – Less damage to e-coat – Less

distortion of metal – Less harmful dust – Less painting – Less replacement of OEM parts with aftermarket
  7. GPR - DEFINITION Glue Pull Repair is a technique to

pull dents with the use of various plastic tabs of different shapes and sizes. They are adhered to the panel’s clear coat with specialized hot melt glues. The adhered tabs are pulled with lifting devices. The process creates a cascading effect on the size of the dent as it is performed and repeated with increasingly smaller tabs and knock down tools until the point of desired result or technician skill threshold is realized. • In body shops, the mark of a successful repair is known when the use of only a small amount of filler is skimmed on, sanded smooth, and repainted.
  8. GPR is NOT PDR With time, skill, and the use

of push tools, GPR can and is used as a means to complete a full PDR repair.
  9. Hippocratic Oath • First we do no harm – Begins

with creating no additional damage & less R&I – Progresses with more control & finesse as the panel is manipulated back to the original shape – Finishes with less paint removal, less filler applied & less painting/blending
  10. Progresses with More Control & Finesse • Surface Area =

Control – Up to 15 square inches!!! Stud welding = fractions of an inch of surface area from which to pull
  11. Finishes with Less Filling & Painting • Less Filling –

Easier to straighten a panel completely with the proper shape and size of device to remove the dent • Less Painting – Finishes aren’t removed until the damage is straightened: remove only what is absolutely needed
  12. CLEAN • Clean the area that you want to repair

before anything else • Isopropyl alcohol • 95-99% strength • Water based cleaner/ degreaser • DO NOT use paint thinner or other acetone based products • It is CRITICAL to properly clean the panel for maximum adhesion
  13. CHECK • Temperature • Size of the dent • Type

of metal – Steel – Aluminum – HSS • Where to start pulling
  14. COAT • Fill surface of the glue tab • Place

lightly on the panel - don’t push it so hard that all the glue squeezes out from underneath the tab(s) • Wait for glue to solidify • Setup time can change based on the tab type, size, and working temp
  15. GPR EQUIPMENT PROVIDERS • KECO Body Repair Products • Camauto

Pro • ProSpot • Betag Innovation • Robaina Direct • Spanesi Pull Up!
