school(AP) / intro college courses in your subject area • Bachelor of Arts in Economics from North Carolina State University ◦ Graduated 2013 | GPA: 3.68 ◦ Minor in Accounting ◦ Expected minor in Computer Science August 2016 • Used my background in economics in the “real world” to describe and explain market behavior to financial regulators, traders, and management in my prior life as a financial analyst at a big investment bank.
a class entitled “Economics For Success” where I got the opportunity to teach middle school students about money, budgeting, and making choices - career choices and everyday choices. • Not in the subject area of economics, but I got the opportunity to teach middle school students how to code the Asteroid video game in the Java programming language. ◦ Wrote a tutorial with a fellow researcher to take the students through how to build the Asteroid game step by step. ▪ Put the tutorial on a website for the students to follow while completing the assignment ▪ Check the tutorial out here: go.ncsu.edu/stride • On login enter any 10 alphanumeric characters, and complete short survey to access tutorial (survey for educational research purposes)
into common misconceptions • My main responsibility with the educational informatics research team is to design and create the user interfaces students will use during educational studies - so I always approach my work with consideration of how the student will experience the material and learn from it. • The experiences I have had teaching economics and computer science has given me insight into the many variables and small intricate details you have to take into account when trying to convey a subject and help students learn.
penchant for experimentation, and a bias towards action • Tolerance for ambiguity/ penchant for experimentation: Educational data is often ambiguous, but that same ambiguity is what excites me as a researcher to experiment further, to ask deeper questions, to find what’s missing, to find out why something unexpected is there, etc. • Bias towards action: I enjoy the process and the collective effort of building something, really anything, but especially if it is in collaboration with a talented team to build something great and impactful.
time management skills • The website instructions that I wrote for the Asteroid game went through multiple different iterations, including multiple different designs, wording, placement of visuals, logical transitions, easy navigation, etc. - all in an effort to improve the learning experience for the student. • Worked as a finance professional for 2 . 5 years with expectations to produce quality work - under considerable time pressure - including written commentary and financial analysis on financial markets.
willingness to learn new tools • Worked with spreadsheets(excel) on a daily basis for 2 .5 years. • Frequently work with Google docs to collaborate on the research that I am doing with the educational informatics team at NC State University. • Skill in Javascript, CSS, HTML, Java, Github, Excel, Google Docs. • Always willing to learn (KA user for 4+ years).
world My goal is to use my skill, talent, and ideas to have the most positive and outreaching impact I can possibly have. It is vital to me that the work that I do is of social value, and that I am part of something that is providing a true need in this world. Education is a true and fundamental need, and I can not think of anything more positive, outreaching, and in need of change.
