  1. red 土 soil + 刀 sword + animal legs Imagine

a more grisly version of Little Red Riding Hood: in order to look more human, the wolf uses a sword to cut off two of his animal legs, spilling drops of red blood on the soil. Note: the top of 刀 sword overlaps with the bottom of soil, so we only see the lower lines. As an element, we simplify the top of red: 亦 . We’ll call this version apple, a red fruit with a short stem.
  2. strange 亦 apple + 夂 walking legs A very strange

sight: an apple with walking legs, running away from the person who wants to eat it! In Japan, it’s considered strange to eat an apple (or any other food) while walking. Be polite and sit down to eat!
  3. yellow graveyard + 由 reason + animal legs Why is

the graveyard fenced off with yellow tape? The reason is that they found a bunch of dismembered animal legs.
  4. sideways 木 tree + 黄 yellow Imagine a tree full

of so many yellow bananas that it falls over sideways.
  5. comma This rare kanji is the name for a design

called the tomoe, made up of comma shapes. Remember it as a picture of a comma; the middle line can symbolize the way that commas split up a sentence. As an element, we’ll call it mosaic—small square tiles that make a pattern.
  6. color 勹 bound up + 巴 mosaic Look into a

kaleidoscope to see a bound up mosaic of color.
  7. discontinue 糸 thread + 色 color The fashion line was

discontinued because the makers ran out of colored thread.
