  2. Definition of pop • “Pop music (a term that originally

    derives from an abbreviation of "popular") is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the Western world during the 1950s and 1960s, deriving from rock and roll.”
  3. General Information: • Cultural: 1950s and 1960s • Origins: United

    Kingdom and United States • Stylistic origins: Traditional pop, folk, classical, popular music, soul, rock and roll.
  4. Important dates: 50s • 1956: Elvis Presley becomes known as

    one of the greatest first rock stars. Still is the best selling solo artist. • 1957: John Lennon and Paul McCartneyln meet. They form a skiffle group called Quarrymen. • Late 1950s: English rock music group is created “The Beatles”. The decade of 1960 to 1970 is dominated by them. • These dates were very important in the creation of Pop.
  5. Important dates: 60s • 1960: Pete Best joins the Beatles.

    • 1961: American singer Patsy Cline becomes a mainstream pop music hit. She becomes known for being the first female to adapt to this change of muisc. • 1968: Ziggy Marley is born.
  6. Important dates 70s • 1972: Michael Jackson brings out his

    first solo hit “Ben”. • 1974: Michael Jackson introduces “the Robot.” • 1975 to 83: Movie Saturday night fever was released. Non stop video streaming was released on MTV. The album of Madonna “Holiday” becomes a hit.
  7. Important dates: 80s • 1983: The red hot chilli peppers

    were formed. • 1983: Michael Jackson makes the moonwalk very popular. • 1985: Michael Jackson releases “Thriller” • 1985: Britney Spears becomes a star of the music world. • 1989: Taylor Allision Swift is born.
