  1. Gianluca Salvatori Progetto Manifattura: A shared space for shaping green

innovation INSITE workshop Designing a more Sustainable Europe ECLT, Venezia, 31st January 2014
  2. Basic research Applied research PROOF OF CONCEPT & DEVELOPMENT Prototyping

and Evaluation Engineering and Production Marketing And Distribution Stages of technological innovation (NSF 1983)
  3. • Vertical integration • Insourcing, in-house model • Centralized and

    hierarchical approach, “command & control” model • Independence • Standardized design • Proprietary / Closed innovation • Size-dependency • Horizontal integration • Outsourcing, offshoring • Peer-model, networking • Interdependence • User-centered design • Open innovation • Size-neutrality Paradigm shift in firm’s organization
  4. New rules sustainability is not just fashion The forces at

work: • Dynamic demographics • Climate change • Scarce natural resources • Changed geopolitics • New industrial hierarchies • Crisis of the Western growth model • Behavioral change • Search for new fundamentals
  5. EUROPEAN COMMISSION - COM(2012) 582 Six emerging sectors for the

European industrial policy 1. Advanced manufacturing technologies for clean production 2. Key enabling technologies (micro- and nano-electronics, advanced materials, industrial biotechnology, photonics, nanotechnology) 3. Bio-based products (bio-plastics, bio-lubricants, bio-solvents, bio-surfactants) 4. Sustainable construction (energy efficiency in residential and public building, sustainable construction products) 5. Clean vehicles and vessels 6. Smart grids
  6. The opportunity to reduce is large • 96 million tonnes

CO2 from Italian buildings • 550 million tonnes CO2 from EU buildings % of total EU Share of annual CO2 emissions from buildings
  7. Ecosystem Public lever Education training Industrial policy and research Alliances

Innovation services Clusters Certifica- tion Demonstra- tion projects Progetto Manifattura Trentino Green Building Cluster TRENTINO INTEGRATED APPROACH
  8. Progetto Manifattura • Transform a historic tobacco facility into an

innovation hub. • Create strategies for public-private partnership. • Demonstrate how to reduce consumption and achieve sustainable growth
  9. Guiding principles • Plan and build a campus dedicated to

companies in the green economy. • Offer a stimulating work environment with public and private activities. • Build and remodel buildings with the lowest possible environmental impact. • Promote innovation through a mix of training, research and production. • Promote social, economic and environmental sustainability.
  10. Designed for business • Shared services and structures: laboratories, training

rooms, exhibition areas, etc. • Collaborative environment • Organizational synergy • Integrated supply chains
  11. The project: 2018 • 1,200 jobs • 120 small companies

    • 210,000 ft2 office and production space Sustainability - 60% Energy use – A Energy class for new buildings – C Energy class for existing buildings – 1 MW photovoltaic energy – 2,500 Kw from biomass – +20 natural daylight - 85% CO2 emissions - 50% auto trips - 60% water demand
  12. Some lessons from Manifattura  Innovation is no longer the

exclusive domain of big companies; radical innovation comes from new, small companies.  Collaboration - within a structured business environment - is as important as competitiveness. A sustainable development strategy needs specific places and services to set up and enhance collaborative ties.  The traditional pattern of concentrating innovation-support resources on a few individuals/organizations, strongly centralized, is highly inefficient.  In the innovation process social and cultural components are more relevant than just technology.  A sustainable development strategy needs a clear understanding of the open innovation process more than just a technology transfer process.
