    • Areal Density Trend • Tape at Hyperscale • Tape vs. Ransomware • Greenest Form of Storage • Optimizing the Storage Strategy 55
  49. Hyperscale Data Centers Turn to Tape • HSDCs are adopting

tape to reduce long term data retention and protection costs, reduce energy consumption, and to ultimately gain competitive advantage in the ultra price- sensitive CSP market. 56
  50. 57 • 580 TB Tape Demo • Magnetic Particle Evolution

    • Areal Density Trend • Tape at Tape vs. Ransomware • Greenest Form of Storage • Optimizing the Storage Strategy • OVH using IBM 3592 20TB tape • Tape provides lowest cost per TB of storage • Tape is secure, scalable, reliable • 30 years archival life • When idle, requires zero energy consumption 57
  51. 58 • In the past nine months, Baidu has used

100,000 tapes to store more than 900 petabytes of data. Compared with ordinary storage, the cost of archive storage products has been reduced by 85%. • Baidu is based on the IBM tape library platform to achieve EB-level tape scale applications, which is also the first cloud platform in China to launch tape archive services. 58

    • Areal Density Trend • Tape at Hyperscale • Tape vs. Ransomware • Greenest Form of Storage • Optimizing the Storage Strategy 61
  54. Tape as an Air Gap Defense • Simply put, an

air gap has no electronic connection to the data on the removable tape cartridge, therefore avoiding unauthorized access. 66
  55. Ransomware Cybersecurity threats and ransomware attacks will impact 95% of

I&O leaders through 2024. They will increasingly need to prove that their data is secure and reliable. - Gartner’s 2020 Strategic Roadmap for Storage, July 2020 67
  56. Agenda • 580 TB Tape Demo • Magnetic Particle Evolution

    • Areal Density Trend • Tape at Hyperscale • Tape vs. Ransomware • Greenest Form of Storage • Optimizing the Storage Strategy 68
  57. Climate Change “In the long run, a human impact on

climate change will be determined by two things—how much warming CO2 causes and how much CO2 is emitted.” – Holman W. Jenkins, Jr., WSJ 72
  58. • Tape related energy consumption produces 87% less CO2 Energy

Advantage of Tape - Based on 10 years, 10 PB, 35% annual growth https://tinyurl.com/y62yhxl9: 73
  59. • Reduced cost of energy contributes to 86% lower TCO

High-performance Mission/Business Critical & Online Archive, Long-term Cloud Service Tier Data Classification SSD, HDD, Tape The Cloud uses all three! Tier 0 SSD Tier 1 HDD Tier 2 HDD, Tape Tier 3 Tape 60 to 80% of all data is archival! Non Mission Critical 77
  62. Storage Optimization Two-thirds of storage admins report that half of

their total data stored is inactive. They will likely need to archive or migrate this data to a lower-cost tier. - Gartner’s 2020 Strategic Roadmap for Storage, July 2020 78
  63. In Today’s World, your Storage Strategy is all about Optimization!

o But value of data changes over time… o Access frequency also changes over the data lifecycle… o Value of data is increasing so retention periods are longer! o Need to balance cost/TB and performance o Consider energy consumption and climate change! o The right data, in the right place, at the right time! 79
