vote in favor of more progressive revenue changes that expand revenue sources. Support of constituents for legislators taking these actions is imperative to offset the special interest lobbying in favor of keeping the more regressive system in place. The two budget bills from the House and Senate are now one bill, ESHB 1109 and behind-the- scenes negotiating is in full swing. The exciting news from the revenue perspective are: •The Extraordinary Profits tax, formerly called the Capital Gains tax (over $250,000 – SB 5961) •Making the REET Real Estate Excise Tax slightly progressive •Funding for Working Families Tax Credit •Reducing the B&O tax on small businesses •Increasing the B&O tax increase on high end service businesses like lawyers, architects and accountants •Keeping the Rainy day Fund intact •Also 1703 Reforming Tax exemptions!! We will see what survives and what else is stealthily added like funding for Charter schools attached to a levy lid lift bill. -League of Women Voters Newsletter 4/14/19
Environment • Buried in the proposed Washington state budget is a plan to spend $534,000 to “study” the use of the lawn pesticide imidacloprid to kill naturally occurring burrowing shrimp in shellfish aquaculture. Imidacloprid is an insecticide neurotoxin and instructions for use specifically warn against use in water. • We are dismayed that legislators inserted the study into the budget after HB 1611 and SB 5626 never made it out of committee. Contact your legislators now to request that this expensive and toxic study be removed from the budget. -League of Women Voters 4/14/19
white supremacist ideology, the alt right typically attracts younger , and more aggressive white men, who hold extreme conservative beliefs. It is a movement that uses social media, online chat boards (such as reddit, 4chan, and discord), memes and websites to recruit new members and spread racist content. They typically rally against multiculturism, immigration, feminism and "political correctness". E.g.: Patriot Prayer Though the alt right used to be contained to primarily online, that has quickly changed. Emboldened by the open racism of President Trump, they have begun to resort to more instances of real world violence and aggression.
for being a progressive region, hate is still able thrive here, partly because our past was founded on hate. Oregon was founded to be a whites only paradise in 1844 and black Americans were not legally allowed to live there. And in WA state redlining and racial covenants kept non- whites out of many neighborhoods until the 1970's, and the KKK had one of the largest hubs on the west coast in the Seattle area until the 1930's.

heart of philosophical nonviolence is taking action to oppose injustice and winning over one's enemies through love and redemptive suffering. • Community members who adopt philosophical nonviolence try to love their enemies and to refrain from any form of violence in all aspects of their lives. • Includes pacifists, adherents of Gandhian and Kingian creeds, members of specific religious communities (e.g., the Quaker community). • Tactical Nonviolence. • Tactical Nonviolent Resistance is a tool for building political power as an organizing technique and as part of an overarching political strategy to achieve specific goals. • Community members who adopt tactical nonviolence may adopt other tactics in other situations - both personal and political. • NSP community members have agreed to adopt tactical nonviolence because we want to win and we agree that nonviolence is the most effective way to accomplish our goals through political means. These are endpoints on a continuum of behavior and not discrete or separate concepts. These endpoints are mutually supportive. Reference: Bruce Hartford, 2004 “Two Kinds of Nonviolent Resistance”
nonviolence, they think of a sort of passivity, a peacefulness. If you are talking about the Civil Rights Movement and our practice of nonviolence, you have to think of aggressive, confrontational activity, edgy activity; action designed to paralyze things as they are, nonviolent actions to force change.“ Bernice Johnson Reagon Founding member, Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee's Freedom Singers Organizer and Member, Sweet Honey in the Rock
to influence people towards affecting some kind of social/political change. Demonstration participants are saying “NO” and speaking truth to power. Fundamental protest audiences are: • Participants. The nonviolent resistors engaged in the protest. • Observers. The individuals at the businesses or institutions the protest is targeting, and the uninvolved bystanders who encounter or observe the protest. • Grapevine. Those who directly hear about the protest from some other person whom they know (including through personal social media such as Twitter, FaceBook, & etc). • Media. Those who learn of the protest through impersonal mass media. Reference: Bruce Hartford, 2011 “The Onion Theory of Nonviolent Protest”
Participants: The participants gain strength through collective action, through standing together to say “NO”. • Everyone else: The direct observers and those who learn about it through the grapevine or media will take their own message from the event and its tactics. The demeanor and discipline of the participants significantly affects the message received and internalized by observers. Observers have to process the message “NO”. Will they awaken and realize they can also say “NO”? Or will they recoil in horror and turn away from the protestors? Remember: whatever people fear, they will hate and oppose. can help peacekeeping, the energy of the event, and the success of the event! You can help other attendees remain calm and focused on the goals of the event. Model your best self, support the cause, and appreciate the work of volunteers supporting the event– it’s contagious! If there are counter-protesters: • Focus your attention and energy (and that of those around you) towards the event and away from disruptions. Ignore counter-protesters- and don’t give them any useful video footage. • Let the peacekeepers and safety officers step in: for example, peacekeepers may create a distance between counter‐protesters and their intended audience- let them do this! Don’t: • Allow yourself to escalate • Encourage those around you escalate • Argue with counter-protesters • Physically confront counter‐protesters • Physically touch (or in any way contact) others, especially if they are agitated • Put your safety or the safety of other attendees at risk in any way.

has launched a despicable and irresponsible attack on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, sharing a propaganda video questioning the Congresswoman's loyalty to the United States. This is as dangerous as it is unprecedented.
