  1. Fixed Operator IMS Deployments – Post-Migration Opportunities Today Sebastian Schumann

Slovak Telekom, a.s. – Core and Control Department 3.-5. October 2011, Madrid, Spain
  2. Topic Textbox Headline §  Fixed network IMS migration – a

new potential?! §  Real triple play – did we not have that since years? §  Desired/vendor driven ideal vs. realistic migration, integration and evolution! §  Where is still potential for operators to change? Questions Textbox Headline §  Post-migration network environment §  Integration scenarios, enhanced services, and “the new territory” §  Outlook and potential for the Telco’s services Fixed Operator IMS Deployments – Post-Migration Opportunities Today October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 2
  3. Slovak Telekom, a.s. §  Slovak Telekom Group is the telecommunication

market leader in Slovakia §  T-Com, T-Mobile (merger in 2010), Zoznam, Posam §  We provide fixed network services, mobile communication, internet access, internet content, data services, CPE, radio and TV broadcasting as well as commercial call center services §  The major shareholder is Deutsche Telekom AG, one of the largest telecommunications operators worldwide §  Successful deployments in SEE as well as in DT group §  One of the biggest national-wide deployment of NGN technology in Europe in 2004, whole city migrated to all-IP NGN in 2007 §  Fixed network IMS migration started in 2011 (class 5 replacement) §  Leader in IPTV (since 2006) and providing also hybrid sat TV (since 2009) §  Extensive FTTx deployments (350.000 households) §  First Flash-OFDM deployment for mobile data in 2005 October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 4
  4. IMS deployment – what comes next? §  Slovak Telekom, a.s.

started migrating the fixed network to IMS in 2011 §  Migration to IMS in SEE mainly by fixed operators so far §  T-Com Hungary, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovakia §  Similar to overall trend in 2010 where fixed deployments were more common [1], no huge change in 2011 [2] §  Main motivation for migration was class 5 migration and lowering OPEX Textbox Headline An analysis based on our experiences about opportunities and challenges of mainly fixed operators that may arise after their migration to IMS. What’s next? October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 5
  5. Challenges in the fixed market §  No “smart terminals” in

the fixed environment yet, still phones §  Sometimes not even IP-terminals (HAG, A-GW) §  Smart phone/tablet is the smart mobile terminal that is represented by the PC at home §  Many parts of the architecture have been “just mapped” from PSTN to IMS §  Households with two lines (private, business) are still two subscribers §  Phone number still main identifier, no aliases considered §  IMS routing is based on phone numbers as well §  Interconnect still via PSTN §  Voice is not considered as a service but still as the service §  Partially wrong communication with the customer §  Customer still has the choice for technology (analog, ISDN, IP-based) §  Wrong understanding: IP-based à Telephony via the Internet à Why not use Skype? http://www.flickr.com/photos/cgc/5259321/ October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 8
  6. Telco’s (forced) transitions §  Role of fixed network operators changed

in the past already §  Network and service were conjunct §  Interconnect and call-through fees for the network operator were paid §  Telephony was overall source of income §  Operators made new investments in many areas but voice §  IPTV started §  Even though as ordinary television rather than an innovation (triple play only marketed) §  Currently connectivity is widely deployed and IPTV as a single product is established §  IP Multimedia Subsystem §  IP connectivity §  IPTV All-IP October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 9
  7. How to provide IP based “new” Telco services? October 11

Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 10 Mass-market can only be reached when the product is easy We have to look at services from user perspective, not from the network perspective We have to de-couple services innovation from our network boundaries
  8. Fixed post-migration service scenarios §  Integration of voice with existing

IP based television §  Call with the set-top-box? §  TV set supporting communications! à  Use all services and devices in your domain for an overall service experience October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 11

  12. Fixed post-migration service scenarios §  Integration of voice with existing

IP based television §  Call with the set-top-box? §  TV set supporting communications! à  Use all services and devices in your domain for an overall service experience §  Extend business voice products towards unified communications §  Integrate with the IMS, if an integration of the platform is planned §  Consider alternatives/gateways to reach customers, but still integrate (XMPP vs SIP) à  Voice is not the only product anymore, but multi-channel interoperable communications §  IT integration to gain unique view about users §  Subscribers become users, strong OSS/BSS support required §  Identity management to be able to map users October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 16
  13. Fixed post-migration service scenarios ctd. §  Not only keep QoS

on IP (“assure it’s not worse”) but increase QoE (“make it better”) §  High-definition will become standard also in communications (voice, video) §  Blended services §  Communications as enabler (presence, messaging, multi-media sessions) §  Integration with own services §  Capable of being integrated with external apps (APIs) §  New business/tariff models §  Ad supported calling (TV set has enough screen estate) §  Traffic vs. content billing (more understandable for the user, fundamental change) §  Multiple devices per user, SMS vs. chat (per-message-billing) §  Web integration §  Click to dial (ad supported, sponsored, billed) October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 17
  14. Interoperability and integration are important §  Interoperability is important §

Not even that much for network elements as for providers and end devices §  Integration is important §  Network elements and back-end service logic can be integrated by yourself, now §  Service enablers, application layer integration §  Rich set of multimedia services accessibility from anywhere, anytime with the same experience §  Service personalization on user/group/community level §  Follow the real user demand for new services à define new service requirements now §  “Reusable capabilities” concept to minimize complexity of systems §  Mobility, openness , and interconnectivity October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 18
  15. Questions I Fixed network IMS migration – a new potential?!

§  Yes §  Voice is only one part of the future communications offer §  Multi-media and rich communications are cheap and easier to integrate with All-IP network (e.g. with IPTV) §  Enhancement with video easier and cheaper for the end user (cmp. ISDN) §  Mapping single users is easier with new standard data models §  Evolve (mostly proprietary) IPTV service architecture towards IMS as control architecture to deliver and fully integrate TV as actual service – and combined with other services October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 19
  16. Questions II Real triple play – did we not have

that since years? §  Customers do not care about technology. Important points are ([3]): §  Price §  Quality of Service, reliability, support §  Quality & Quantity of Content (for TV) §  Usability, features, and services §  Triple play mostly internet + voice (not even IP in the past) + television over IP §  Real triple play integrates the delivered products for an overall service experience October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 20
  17. Questions III Desired/vendor driven ideal vs. realistic migration, integration and

evolution! Where is still potential for operators to change? §  Beside SAE/EPC/LTE for next few years will be IMS only converged and standardized common service control platform in transition period for Telco’s §  Requirement for new multimedia services and new media formats (bandwidth hungry with required QoS) before NG-access technologies fully deployed (LTE/FTTx) §  Telco’s and Telco vendors should focus on industry advantages and provide environment for new converged multimedia services §  Some RCS features are good, some transitional alternative NOW is better §  Use potential of full back-end control and interfaces (esp. TV screen) §  Integrate Internet service to increase retention rather than suppressing them October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 21
  18. Summary §  Overview about a few challenges as well as

approaches how to cope with them §  Highlight Telco’s potential in the ever-growing competition §  Voice communication transitions to IP and offers new potential as a service §  Integration with other services §  Extensible due to higher flexibility (voice comm’s as such, not “enriching” with non- voice features) §  Motivation to rather act now than wait for the perfect standard §  Utilize existing infrastructure §  Integrate on the back-end §  Blend services §  Integration is important (internally as well as opening for external access) October 11 Sebastian Schumann – IMS Global Congress 22
