AI Mastery Through Socrates

What you want to ask AI is exactly what you don't know. Which means, by definition, you can't explain it well. This fundamental paradox is where Socrates comes in. Some practical techniques is developed through Socratic dialogue.

    e A n c i e n t s f o r A I | S e r i e s 0 3 AI Mastery Through Socrates How “Knowing You Don’t Know” Transforms Your AI Dialogue Tomoya Fukumoto (福本 知也)
  2. Why Socrates for AI What you want to ask AI

is exactly what you don’t know. Which means, by definition, you can’t explain it well Socrates Philosophy Actively own your ignorance and articulate it Proactive attitude Socrates’ Value Blind spots don’t even appear in context -- only questions expose them Expose blind spots
  3. 01 Know What You don’t Know POINT 1 ─ Give

AI the knowledge background it cannot know on its own. That is your knowledge boundary. × Without Boundary “Explain how DNA works.” AI has no background to work with. It can’t judge the right depth or angle for the response. ◦ With Boundary “I have a physics degree. Biology is outside my expertise. Explain how DNA works.” AI can approach from physics angles. Depth and framing become clear. POINT 2 ─ You need baseline knowledge to draw a boundary. Without knowing “DNA = biology,” you can’t frame the boundary Lv.0 Don’t even know the word DNA → Can’t draw any boundary yet Lv.1 Know “DNA blongs to biology” → Boundary drawable. Lv.2 Know how deep your biology knowledge goes → Can pass a precise boundary Map your knowledge boundary and hand it to AI
  4. 02 Socratic Method To map your knowledge boundary, flip it

    – let AI question you. ① Request Question “On [topic], ask me one by one to deepen my understanding” ② AI Questions You AI becomes the Socrates ③ You Answer Your Answers reveal where your understanding stands ④ Clarity Emerges What you wanted to know becomes clear as you answer ⑤ Repeat Knoledge boundary gradually becomes defined Flip the dynamic – put AI in questioning seat. By casting AI in the role of Socrates, the boundaries of your own thinking are illuminated from the outside.
  5. 03 The Blind Spot Rule What you believe unconsciously cannot

be articulated. Only outside questions and perspectives can expose it. The Geocentric Trap Someone who believes the Sun orbits the Earth asks abount celestial movement → No matter what context they provide, they will never realize the Earth is moving Blind spots don’t even appear in context Solutions Ask AI to challenge your premises “This is how I see [topic]. Point out what I’m unconsciously assuming.” Explicitly ask for gaps in your thiking “Find the gaps in my reasoning.” Reframe from a different angle ”Explain [topic] from a frame I haven’t considered.”
  6. Summary ─ AI Mastery Through Socrates 01 Know What You

Don’t Know What you want to ask AI is what you don’t know. Map the boundary of your ignorance and hand it to AI. 02 Socratic Method To map your knowledge boundary, flip it – let AI question you. 03 The Blind Spot Rule What you believe unconsciously cannot be articulated. Only outside questions and perspectives can expose it.
