  1. • What are Iowa community colleges role in labor supply?

    • We already know degrees provide an economic return (Schenk & Matsuyama, 2009).
  2. • Educational administrative records rose in popularity during the 1990s.

    • Actively used to meet state and federal requirements (e.g., Perkins IV Act). • Unemployment Insurance (UI) records are used to administer unemployment insurance benefits.
  3. Many studies have used UI records to calculate wages and

returns to degree (e.g., Schenk & Matsuyama, 2009). Studies have not focused on industry of employment.
  4. Majors are chosen from the Community College MIS, which uses

the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIPs). Each employee is linked to an employer, which is categorized into an industry using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

  12. • College parallel (transfer) programs provide half of the labor

supply from community colleges. • Those students have relatively weak earnings (Schenk & Matsuyama, 2009). • Health science majors almost universally transition to health-related industries. • Manufacturing is supplied labor from all career clusters.
