  1. Play Time! Exploring digital experiences with board games, train sets

    and 3D printed toilets Shae Quabba - Design Anthropologist - March 2019 © © (2015) S.Quabba
  2. –Koskinen (2010) p23 “We need to find a way to

help people to imagine and be playful” “How do you reflect & discover, rather than merely exercise the mouth and head which often do not move very far…” –Brendon Clark email, University of Southern Denmark Design Anthropologist in the field! I’m reflecting and discovering!
  3. Shae’s Play Formula Insights Why are you using play? Methods

What play will you create? Application How will you build the play?
  4. Formula Part 1: Guide To Play Insights Make sense of

the world Surface hidden drama Enhance translation & storytelling Hey, check out my insights!
  5. Understand and comprehend Make new meaning/ negotiate meaning Explore future

possibilities in simulated contexts Generate solutions or pivot concepts Question cohabitation with technology and interactions (2018) S.Quabba (2018) S.Quabba Make sense of the world
  6. Surface assumptions and ideas Address competing pressures on design Negotiate

identity, power, agency Explore social action and influence Understand emotional expression and attachment with objects Make ambiguous or strange (2015) S.Quabba (2015) S.Quabba (2015) S.Quabba Surface hidden drama
  7. Create meta-language, terminology Challenge decisions, assumptions Understand object resonance, symbolism

and rituals Comprehend imagined futures Experiencing and being in the story (2017) S.Quabba (2017) S.Quabba Enhance translation & storytelling
  8. Formula Part 2: Ways To Create Play Object mapping Participatory

modelling Generative prototyping Visualisation/ collage Lego® Serious Play® Make Enact Tell Tangible Interviews Mock board/ card games Experience prototyping PLEX cards Directed storytelling Theatre games Body-storming Role-play Simulation exercises Physicalising cognitive walkthroughs Object speed-dating References at the end!
  9. Formula Part 3: Build The Play Which phase of design

am I in? Will play help in this situation? What’s my deadline? Get ready to build!
  10. Am I exploring possibilities, generating ideas or evaluating concepts? Do

I know anything about the subject or have hypotheses? Is there a design concept or prototype? Am I trying to validate a proof of concept through research? Am I evaluating different designs against each other? Be a Time Lord and experiment in your phases! Which phase of design am I in?
  11. Do I need…deeper insight, to tell a story, generate an

idea? What are the minimum findings I need? Could another method get me there just as well? Is passive or active research activity best? Should it be participatory? With whom? Participatory is often best! Will play help in this context?
  12. How much time do I have to execute this? What

can I re-use from my toolkit, what do I have? Am I creating on my own/ with others? Do I have time to test it? How crafty am I/others in my team? The circle is complete! What’s my deadline?
  13. #Tipstoplay KISS: Too much complexity increases cognitive load FOCUS: When

play isn’t focussed it clouds the insights DONT’ BE SCARED: Know when to provoke or challenge your audience
  14. Use of Play in design Read I. Koskinen, “Design Research

Through Practice” (2011) and B. Martin et.al. “Universal Methods Of Design” (2012) Academic authors in this field: E. Brandt; T. Binder; S. Bødker, J. Halse; P. Ehn; B. Clark; A. Dunne; A.
