STPA in the European academic and industrial applications

STPA in the European academic and industrial applications

STPA is a new hazard analysis technique. In the last five years, various experts, researchers and students who work or study in Europe, have used STPA for analysing the hazards of complex systems in different areas.
The work is oriented towards answering the question who are those who apply STPA in Europe and where they applied it?

STPA is a new hazard analysis technique. v In the last five years, various experts, researchers and students who work or study in Europe, have used STPA for analysing the hazards of complex systems in different areas. v The work is oriented towards answering the question who are those who apply STPA in Europe and where they applied it?
  3. Research Objectives 3/20 Abdulkhaleq, Chatzimichailidou, Pelegrín 2017 Research Objectives v

To conduct a quantitative review on the use of STPA in European academic and industrial sectors: v To present the current status of STPA in Europe v To provide indications about using STPA and through that aid the STAMP European committee v To help in building a European STAMP association and network
  4. Data Resources 4/20 Abdulkhaleq, Chatzimichailidou, Pelegrín 2017 Data Resources v

We got different existing resources from: v Carlos Lahoz’s systematic review dataset (2014) v John Thomas’ STAMP workshops attendance list v XSTAMPP’s Users list and European STAMP workshops list v COST action proposal list from Dr. Ioannis Dokas v To automatically gather data, we used the reference management tool (JabRef) to extract the online publications from different bibliographic databases: Ø IEEE Xplore, Ø ACM, Ø Google Scholar, Citeseer, Springer Link, google scholar, ect.
  5. Data Collection and Extraction 5/20 Abdulkhaleq, Chatzimichailidou, Pelegrín 2017 Data

Collection & Extraction Constricting Search Strings Collecting Data by JabRef (396) Excluding non- European publications (246) Carlos’ Dataset Comparing the final list with existing data Other data resources Editing the contact information of the authors (150) Classification of the final list of the publications
  6. 7/20 Abdulkhaleq, Chatzimichailidou, Pelegrín 2017 Results Total Results v The

results present only the publications which are done before 1 August, 2017. v We find only 150 European publications related to STAMP methodologies out of 396 international publications. 13. 17/20 Abdulkhaleq, Chatzimichailidou, Pelegrín 2017 Discussion Disscusion v The use

of the STAMP methodologies in Europe increases year after year. v Most of these works are done in academia rather than in industry in Europe. Why? v Difficulties: v Some of the STAMP-related works are not published online due to privacy issue. Therefore, we could not put them into our database. v Some master & bachelor theses are not available online. v By using an automatic tool for gathering information, the terminologies STAMP, STPA, CAST lead to gather non-related publications.
  14. 18/20 Abdulkhaleq, Chatzimichailidou, Pelegrín 2017 Conclusion Conclusion v We reviewed

the current status of the STAMP-related works done in European between the period 2008 to 1 August, 2017. v Different European organizations are worked on STAMP/STPA/CAST in different areas. v Based on our results, we believe that it is time to build a European STAMP association and network to increase the relations between the academia and industry.
