  1. Preview •  Obtain an understanding of the key components of

    developing a clear and compelling vision •  Gain some experience by participating in a Visioning exercise
  2. What’s a Vision? •  A picture of what success will

    be at a particular time in the future. – What does our organization look like? – How big is it? – What are we known for? – Why does anyone care about what we do? – How do the members of this organization feel about their work and volunteering?
  3. Vision – Cont. •  Does not change often •  Gets

    everyone in organization excited to work •  It's the cathedral everyone is coming to work every day to construct •  A great vision is bold and inspiring •  Must have a reasonable chance of getting there
  4. Why is it important? •  A vision makes everyone feel

    like they belong •  A powerful vision creates a reason to sacrifice •  A clear and compelling vision acts like a lighthouse or landmark •  A vision keeps you going
  5. Visioning •  Visioning is an activity/process you engage in to

    define/develop your vision. •  Visioning is astonishingly powerful for two reasons: –  First, when you let yourself vision, sweeping all limiting considerations away, you're often surprised by what you see. –  Second, having seen that, you find opportunities, make decisions, and venture forth in a much more clear and purposeful way.
  6. Activity •  Break-up into small groups of 4-6 •  What

    kind of Vietnamese community would you like to live in as an adult? •  What kind of Vietnamese community would you want your kids to grow up in?
  7. Activity (Small Group) •  Break into small groups to brainstorm

    what an ideal community would be like 10 to 20 years •  Be specific. •  Example categories: language, representation in the media, education, healthcare, culture, social justice, leadership
  8. Activity (Large Group) •  One member from each group to

    make one positive, declarative one-sentence statement about how the community will be in the future
  9. Activity (Large Group) •  Highlight some of the major differences

    between now and the future you have created
  10. Debrief •  What was this exercise like for you? • 

    Did you have new insights? •  Were there any surprises? •  Was there value in connecting to your vision? •  How can you stay connected to your vision? •  How can you communicate your vision to your members?
