Clothing – “Color” • “The main decorative additions for clothing were paints and the quills of the porcupine and the shafts of stripped bird feathers” (Medicine). • Feathers from different birds have different meanings,. For example, a Bluebird represents happiness and fulfilment while a Dove represents gentleness and kindness. • “Inuit clothing is well- adapted to the climate and the activities necessary for survival.” (Traditional Clothing) • Each pieces of clothing has different colors, and patterns for symbolic reasons. Beliefs/Traditions – “Message” • All First Nations believed that their values and traditions were gifts from the Creator. • One of the most important teachings was that people should live in harmony with the natural world and all it contained. A popular tradition: • “Indigenous religions rarely have written sacred texts. Rather, their beliefs focus on dances, costumes, masks, ritual traditions, and sacred artifacts (material objects)” (Indigenous Religions). • “The Sun Dance is an annual Plains Aboriginal cultural ceremony performed in honour of the sun, during which participants prove bravery by overcoming pain.” (Gadacz) • The performance of any ceremony was banned due to the Indian act • Ceremonies were performed in secrecy. Connections • The main connection to the poem “i am graffiti’ is that all cultures are like graffiti and the stronger their adhesive, color, and message is the stronger the culture. • The indigenous culture has shown to have a very strong graffiti. • Other cultures such as the black community have shown similar traits to a good graffiti (being very advocate for themselves). Conclusion • The Indigenous culture hasn’t gone extinct due to its culture being like graffiti. • They have a strong connection the world with issues that they affect them directly. • People have tried to paint over the Indigenous “graffiti” in the past through residential schools, The High Arctic relocation. • Even after having their culture painted over, the Indigenous peoples believed in their culture and they slowly worked to scrub that paint off. After many years of hope and resilience they have managed to wash majority of the terrible paint away.
