Motion in Straight line- IIT JEE Preparation

Motion in Straight line- IIT JEE Preparation

Motion in Straight Line is the most important topic for IIT JEE syllabus. It is counted among the most difficult topic as the same problem for a particular concept could be imagined in different context and reference. This presentation describes the basic terms in with basic language so that students can understand the topic easily. Author- Pooja Choudhary (works at Best IIT Coaching Institute) . 1.  Motion means moving from one place to another. For

example, a moving bus or walking man on a road  It is calculated with respect to dimension  When motion is measured with respect to a straight line is translational motion.
  2.  Kinematics: Also called as Motion  Kinetic Energy: Energy

related to motion  Rotational Motion: In this motion of object is in circular path with respect to a reference point
  3.  Vibrational Motion: In this, the motion of a object

is like vibration and object moves back and forth  Speed: It denotes how fast object is moving irrespective to direction. (Speed = Distance/time)
  4.  Displacement: It is the shortest distance between initial point

of moving object to the final point  Average Velocity: It is the rate of change of speed with respect to direction
  5.  Scalar: These are those basic quantities which has only

magnitude. Ex- Speed and length  Vector: These quantities has both direction and magnitude to measure. Ex- velocity and acceleration
  6. Q. Measure value of Displacement can be negative. True or

not! A. Yes, it is true that displacement can be measured. The negative value shows that the direction is in opposite direction to reference of measurement. Q. Is distance can be measured negative? A. No, it can’t be. Distance can be measured till zero which is rest position of object. Q. Magnitude of velocity calculated can be negative or not? A. Yes, it can be. Because velocity is measured in terms of direction which can be in forward or backwards direction which denotes its sign. Q. Can speed be negative or not? A. No, it cannot be negative as the lowest speed of a object can be zero which is rest position
  7.  This velocity is calculated at a particular instant of

time.  Mathematically, it is a velocity function which is time derivative of position function at a particular time approaching another instant
  8.  It is termed as instantaneous velocity which is changing

with respect to time i.e.  Unit: m/s2  Instantaneous acceleration is calculated at specific instant of time having time derivative of velocity function.  Constant Acceleration is the condition when velocity continuously increase or decreases at a specific rate.
