It’s free, it’s research-based and nearly half of you are engaged in enhancing your summer reading efforts through the use of the Lexile-based “Find a Book” tool, this summer.

All rights reserved. 10 History and Context—Mathematics In 2013, we added mathematics to the Summer Learning Challenge by encouraging a research-based math skills maintenance program based on grade- level standards that helps prepare students for college and careers. In this initiative, parents receive daily emails with engaging activities and links to educational resources.

Why Summer Math? • Summer math loss is more pronounced than reading loss. • Students lose math ability regardless of household income level. • Parents are more likely to read with their children than practice math skills. • Math practice is less intuitive and more technical than reading practice. • On average, all students, regardless of socio-economic status, lose approximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation over the summer months each year. All rights reserved. • In 2013, NC DPI launched “Give Five— Read Five” campaign to fight summer learning loss. • Initiative asks parents, business leaders and members of our communities to donate five new or gently-used books. • Research from MetaMetrics and Harvard University professor Dr. James Kim has shown that reading five books over the summer helps to prevent summer loss. Give Five—Read Five, Summer 2013 32 • Letters to parents, businesses and community leaders. • MetaMetrics provides support for PSAs, press releases and flyers that promote and enhance, as well as participated in publicized launch event. • 74 elementary schools collected 123,152 books to send home with students when the 2012-2013 school year ended.

Give Five—Read Five, Summer Stats 38 • 150 schools and 53 school districts participated. • Participants collected a grand total of 277,334 books to send home with students for the summer. • 2014 more than doubled the amount of books collected summer 2013 by 74 participating schools. • Goal for 2015 campaign is to bring in enough books to double the 2014 total.
