Life in Brazil: A Free ESL Lesson Plan

Life in Brazil: A Free ESL Lesson Plan

This lesson should be used to practice speaking skills with a student at a pre-intermediate level. The pre-intermediate level can be equated to the A2 level. In any case, you should use this lesson with a student that can use basic vocabulary to communicate in everyday situations. This lesson plan is a great opportunity for them to practice using the present simple tense to talk about life in Brazil. It is especially useful if you are looking for a fun, light lesson to teach.

  6. Hello my name is Thiago and I live in Manaus

in Brazil. Brazil is the largest country in South America. In Brazil we speak Portuguese. Brazil has the largest rainforest in the world, called the Amazon rainforest. The Amazon rainforest is named after the Amazon River, which is the largest river in the world. My city, Manaus is the biggest city in the Amazon region. I am not originally from Manaus. I was born in Sao Paulo and I grew up there.
  7. I am a biologist. I moved to Manaus to study

the Amazon rainforest. I want to help save the rainforest. The rainforest gets smaller each year because of human activity and pollution. This is sad because the Amazon rainforest is special. It is full of birds, animals, insects and plants. Most of the animal and plant life cannot be found anywhere else in the world. It is important to save the forest.
  8. Manaus has a population of 2 million people. The city

is isolated. It is hard to reach from the rest of Brazil. Manaus is almost 4,000km from Sao Paulo! Manaus is isolated so most people come to Manaus by plane. Since Manaus is on the Amazon River, many people also take boats to come here.
  9. When I visit my family in Sao Paulo, I am

always a little shocked. Sao Paulo is a giant city, with almost 12 million inhabitants. There are very large skyscrapers and heavy traffic. You need a lot of time to drive from one side of the city to the other! I prefer Manaus to Sao Paulo because I love nature. And of course, my job is in Manaus. Brazil is an inspiring country. There are many different places and landscapes to visit. The coast is very long. We have many beautiful beaches where you can swim, scuba dive and surf. In the south of the country there are small mountains and hills.
  10. to be continued… Tourists love to visit Rio de Janeiro.

The beach in Rio de Janeiro is called Copacabana and it is very beautiful. Rio de Janeiro is close to Sao Paulo. Brazilian Carnival is one of the best times to visit Brazil. The country becomes a giant and colorful party! Every town has a wonderful street parade.
  11. Think about these questions! What do you know about Brazil?

What can you remember about the Amazon rainforest? What do tourists like to do in Brazil? What animals can you find in Brazil? What do you remember about Rio de Janeiro, Manaus and Sao Paulo?
  12. Now, tell your teacher! Brazil is a country… (Where is

it?) The Amazon rainforest is… In the Amazon you can find... (Which mammals, birds and insects?) You can also see… (Which plants?)
  13. Now, tell your teacher! Brazil has big cities too, like…

(What can you say about Brazil’s cities?) Brazilians like to… Tourists who come to Brazil like to visit… Brazil is famous for its carnival. During the carnival… (What happens? What can you see?)
