  1. “There are a number of outstanding colleges in this country

that offer excellent undergraduate programs. There are a smaller number of institutions that combine brilliant undergraduate education with world-class research. “But there are no universities that have done what Notre Dame aspires to do: to become a preeminent research University, to offer an unsurpassed undergraduate program, and to infuse both with a religious and moral framework that imbues knowledge with the power to benefit human beings.” — Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. President
  2. YOU CAN NEVER TRULY KNOW YOURSELF UNTIL YOU LOOK WITHIN.

Set your own ambitious goals. Choose your own path. And then challenge yourself every step of the way. This is why we encourage you to ask the big, enduring questions, the ones with no easy answers. How do I become my own self? How can my passions help contribute to the greater good? What is my calling? The truth is, a strong education goes beyond simply gaining intellect. It’s your path to wisdom— a deeper exploration of self and a stronger investigation of what it means to succeed and live a life of purpose and fulfillment. YOUR QUEST FOR WISDOM BEGINS HERE. Students come to Notre Dame to learn not only how to think, but also how to live fully. They come to join one of the best academic communities in the world, where they work more like family than classmates. And they come to be part of the only faith-based University in the nation’s top 20. We have always been and will always be a place that makes a profound impact on our students’ lives—and, ultimately, through them, an even greater impact on society. We aren’t simply preparing our students for the world today; we’re preparing them to change the world. We teach them to explore and reflect deeply, to unlock their passions, and embrace what makes them happy. Because, through our students’ quest for wisdom, they learn to lead lives of purpose.
  3. 5 FOR 175 YEARS we have been educating and empowering

compassionate individuals, following in the footsteps of our inspirational founder, Reverend Edward Sorin, C.S.C., who envisioned the University of Notre Dame as a powerful force for good in this world. We’ve earned Congressional Gold medals, investigated war crimes, produced Nobel Laureates, and we’ve been recognized as thought leaders in aerospace studies, entrepreneurship, global health, and philosophy. Our success isn’t measured by prizes, dollar signs, or accolades, though. It’s measured by how we serve humanity. And as a University, we’ve been part of some of the most important moments of progress in the last two centuries. In 1964, when our beloved former president, Reverend Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., joined hands and sang “We Shall Overcome” with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., our University president did not know when or if civil rights would be realized in our country. But he knew that progress was necessary—and he devoted himself wholeheartedly to the cause. As Chairman of the Civil Rights Commission and an outspoken advocate for equal treatment of all citizens, Father Hesburgh contributed to some of the greatest social and ethical strides in modern history. The fact that he lived to see civil rights efforts realized through the election of the nation’s first African- American president is proof that making strides starts with taking a stand. This same devotion to progress is expressed at Notre Dame every day— in ways big and small, on-campus and off, by faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Despite our many points of view, we all share a common purpose.
  4. Our value system challenges us to think about important issues

from every angle. We encourage soul-searching, promote scholarly development in and out of class, and place an emphasis on academic freedom and research as integral for advancing human understanding. From day one, we equip our students with the powers of discernment—providing an ethical foundation that’s as solid as the educational one, and preparing leaders with a solid moral compass for the future. L E AV E N O P R E S U M P T I O N AS A NOTRE DAME STUDENT, YOU’LL EMBARK ON AN ACADEMIC JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY. YOU’LL SET FORTH TO EXPLORE YOUR EVERY INTEREST, PASSION, AND CALLING AND YOU’LL BE GIVEN EVERY CHANCE YOU NEED TO PURSUE WISDOM AND PURPOSE. 6
  5. 7 Every student’s education features a core curriculum as a

common foundation that’s rooted in Catholic liberal arts education. It offers every student the knowledge, experience, and confidence they’ll need to lead a fulfilling life in any career, any position of leadership, and any endeavor. You’ll push yourself, test yourself, and make the kind of progress that leads to a life of critical thinking and creative problem-solving. You’ll become comfortable with being uncomfortable. At Notre Dame, we know callings outweigh careers. That’s why we provide an abundance of resources and opportunities, stronger connections, and a profoundly supportive community. As an immigrant from Mexico, he’s always been passionate about making a difference for families like his. At Notre Dame, he was able to challenge notions of immigration reform and education policy. This led to five internships, like one at CBS News and one at TN Score. Going beyond the classroom showed Julio how to become a leader, drive change, and solve some of the greatest challenges that face immigrants and young people today. C L A I R E N AU M A N ' 2 0 ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING For Claire, engineering is all about serving people. That’s what drew her to tutoring, serving as co-president of Engineers Without Borders, and running a website for aspiring engineers called Engineer for the Soul. She is inspired and propelled by the strong ties between her faith and the study of climate change, food security, and sustainable energy. She’s gained experience through managing large projects, working with communities in Cameroon, and conducting industry interviews for her website. Claire can’t imagine doing anything other than working to solve these great challenges of our time. Ten years before the Wright brothers’ first flight, Notre Dame engineering professor Albert Zahm was conducting aerospace experiments on campus and organizing the first International Aeronautic Conference in Chicago. Today, the engineering program continues to inspire and prepare engineering students to help inform the future of engineering. We teach you to think like an engineer, considering your work from many angles. We help you work like an engineer through service-learning projects and internships. Upper-level coursework and a capstone research seminar will give you the opportunity to collaborate with your classmates as you design and execute solutions to real-life problems.

  10. 12 RANDI MCQUEEN '18 ARCHITECTURE AND FRENCH Like most architecture

students, one of Randi’s favorite opportunities has been studying classical architecture in Rome. And in her case, that’s because it gave her the necessary experience to earn grants from the Nanovic Institute so she could live, work, and study in Paris. There, she conducted two research projects and worked as an intern with the firm ARCAS on urban development projects. Randi not only enjoyed living the life of a practicing French architect, but she even got to design some buildings for communities in France—work she plans to continue after graduation. As the only American program that includes a full year of academic study in Rome’s historic center, the School of Architecture brings together a unique combination of classical training, hands-on exploration, and real-world experience. Our five-year professional degree program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board and requires students to learn hand-drawing and drafting skills, while also studying architecture through formal ordering, traditional construction, and architectural history. In Rome, students explore the Eternal City, one of the greatest examples of architecture and urbanism in the world. Learn to consider the culture, history, and community impact of a given structure and graduate prepared to practice both traditional and nontraditional forms of architecture. We believe there’s always something bigger than us, something just beyond our understanding, and we’re here to find it. To reach deep, solve the most pressing problems, and use our findings for the good of the world. We encourage innovation throughout all of our more-than-twenty labs and facilities. And our faculty provide personalized support for students engaged in every area of research, including cancer, environmental change, alternative energy, genomics, global health, network science, and many more. In class, and through services like the Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement (CUSE), we give our students countless opportunities for independent and collaborative research, both on There Is Always Something To Be Discovered and off campus. From developing Wii games that help stroke patients, to collecting and studying deep sea core samples, and from publishing your research in the Journal of Science to becoming the first students ever allowed to 3D-scan the Taj Mahal, this is not research for the sake of accolades. This is research for the sake of making a difference in people’s lives. These breakthroughs are born from passion and discovery, driven by both the heart and the mind.

  14. 16 YOUR OWN Founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross

as a “powerful means for doing good in this world,” our Catholic mission is as much an intellectual pursuit as a spiritual journey. We are home to an academic culture that encourages the pursuit of truth for its own sake, where a diversity of beliefs and perspectives contribute to the larger conversation. Classrooms and labs are the stages for discussion, debate, inquiry—and, ultimately, a dialogue between faith and reason across disciplines. Our dedication to this mission guides our every action. It means we have our one overarching goal Y O U R M I S S I O N I S TO D I S COV E R in mind always: to be a force for good in the world. As a Notre Dame student, you become part of this mission and all that you learn— the research you conduct, the internships, the study abroad—shapes who you are as a person. Whether you’re building bridges in South America, researching the human genome, or filming a documentary about criminal justice issues (all things our students have done, by the way), the aim is clear. Your academic experience at Notre Dame will inspire in you a human solidarity and concern for the common good that bears fruit as learning becomes service to justice.
  15. HERE, YOU’LL ENTER AN OPEN-MINDED ENVIRONMENT THAT WELCOMES ALL RELIGIONS,

BELIEFS, IDEAS, AND PERSPECTIVES. We understand that discovering your faith is an intensely personal experience—one that will help you discover your role in society, live out your passion, and engage empathetically with others. On campus, you’ll find 58 chapels, and throughout the South Bend community, we have strong relationships with a wide range of other faith leaders ready to welcome you with open arms. We encourage you to learn deeply about yourself through reflection, discovery, and experience, and we provide a quiet presence of support so that you are never alone in your journey. Campus Ministry At Notre Dame, we support everyone’s spiritual journey, encouraging you to learn about yourself through discernment, reflection, and experience. We have one of the largest Campus Ministry organizations in the country, which means there’s always an event, program, or trip for you to take part in. Whether you pop into our offices, stop by the Basilica of the Sacred Heart for Mass, or take a quiet moment at the Grotto on your way back to your residence hall, you’ll find a built-in support system here. And with organizations like multifaith clubs, we make sure you have every resource you need to help you grow in your spirituality and resolve. WE CELEBRATE MORE THAN 100 MASSES PER WEEK, WITH MORE THAN 40 ON SUNDAY
