  1. About the activity In this activity, you will get to

    know your semifinalist by hosting a video interview to learn about the team, their venture, and their customers.
  2. By hosting a recorded video call, you provide a valuable

    opportunity for the semifinalist to see and hear how they pitch. This will help founders to clearly communicate their business.
  3. These slides contain your interview guide to help you ask

    key questions semifinalist need to answer to qualify for the next round of judging.
  4. Instructions On May 27th you will receive an email introduction

    to your semifinalist team. Schedule a time with your semifinalist to host a video call before June 10th.
  5. Instructions Use google hangouts, skype, or a webinar software to

    host and record a 30-45 minute call. Let the semifinalist know your will be recording.
  6. Interview Guide Use the following questions as a guide. You

    don’t need to ask them all one after another. Dig deeper into their answers by asking, “why is that?” and asking them to explain things you don’t know.
  7. Start with asking the semifinalist to pitch you their business.

    • What is the problem? Why is it a problem? • What is your solution? • How do you make money?
  8. What was the inspiration or genesis of this business? •

    Why did you start this business? Is this a problem you had? • What was the first thing you did to start this business? • Tell us about a time you had to be resourceful to overcome barrier with starting this business? • Did you have any key partners to help you start or who provided a turning point in the business.
  9. What does your company need most right now? • Why

    is this your biggest need? • What would help you solve this need?
  10. Tell us about your team. • How did your team

    meet? • What makes you the right team to do this? • What are your biggest advantages?
  11. Learn about who the company serves. • Who are you

    serving with your company mission? • Are your users also your customers? • What is their current challenge? • What do they do now to solve this problems
  12. Learn more about the user profile. • What does a

    day in the life of your user look like? • Where do they live? • What work do they do? What is their role? • What is their social environment like?
  13. Two key questions for your semifinalist to answer. • How

    many users are you currently reaching? • How many users will you need to reach for scale?
  14. Learn about user outreach. • How is your company currently

    acquiring users? • What have your tried before that didn’t work? • What do you wish you could do or test?
  15. Question from the semifinalist. Before you end your conversation ask

    your semifinalist if they have any questions for you. Use this opportunity to explore any needs or obstacles facing the semifinalist.
  16. Next Steps. Share your recorded video with your semifinalist team.

    Offer any constructive feedback on their pitch or any ways you might be able to help through network connections. Your venture will use their interview answers to complete their semifinal round entry requirements.
