North Glasgow Integrated Water Management System: using a scheduled ancient monument and modern technology to unlock regeneration

The North Glasgow Integrated Water Management System (NGIWMS) promotes the creation of a pioneering drainage system, using a scheduled ancient monument and modern technology, to unlock regeneration across Scotland’s Central belt. The concept uses exemplar sustainable drainage principles that promote urban placemaking, enabling economic regeneration, flood risk reduction, water quality management and habitat improvement. NGIWMS demonstrates how canals can meet the needs of the 21st century and beyond, whilst also developing technologies applicable to other water management challenges.

  3. − Utilise the canal as the drainage route − Utilise

the summit pound of the canal for storage during forecasted extreme events – there is potentially ~42,000m3 of storage available − Develop through Water Management Areas (WMAs) − Develop Dynamic Water Management Systems (WMS) comprising of Water Management Elements (WMEs) through each WMA for primary drainage and water quality control and to provide a resource − Dynamic WMS will hold water under normal conditions to create better design options − Non-dynamic WMS will require to meet normal planning and best practice WSUD approaches The concept
