  1. RTV offers its viewer more explicit ‘‘guidelines for living’’ than

other television genres. The representation provided resonates so strongly because it corresponds closely with our present social and economic milieu The ‘authenticity’ and subjectivity that used to underpin the validity of documentaries about social problems has now been linked, through the new tele- vision formats, to the exploration of individual subjectivities ‘Reality’ formats also echo traditional documentaries in their use of ‘ordinary’ people, rather than paid actors, but have moved away from making clear links between individual problems and social conditions REALITY TV Main characteristics 01 220
  2. ‘Reality’ formats also echo traditional documentaries in their use of

‘ordinary’ people, rather than paid actors, but have moved away from making clear links between individual problems and social conditions Reality shows invite the viewer to identify, or not identify, with the characters. However we should recognise that this invitation is not neutral but structured. In this regard, ideologies play a role in determining how the invitation is contructed. 3. EXTREME MAKEOVER HOME EDITION According to Luke Winslow 01 220

The program tells each family’s story in a way that lets the audience know that these are ‘‘good,’’ moral people living an idyllic, all-American existence It is as if these families have not been over-civilized and, henceforth, corrupted by city life. They remain pure and moral by staying removed from society. The audience learns, however, that this ordinary, all-American family has recently fallen on difficult financial times and is now forced to live in decrepit housing conditions.
  4. Frustration comes from the suffering of each family, which can

be caused by any number of reasons but is almost always rooted in something outside the social structure, such as health problems, accidents, and natural disasters. The intervention of ABC resolves the contradiction between the morality of the families and their material conditions. EXTREME MAKEOVER HOME EDITION According to Luke Winslow 01 220
  5. The show insists on the mismatch between the moral standard

of families and their material conditions. If you are a good person, you deserve appropriate, middle class, material condition. Therefore, if you your moral standards are low, then you deserve social sufferings. As a result, those living in poverty are the main cause of their troubles.
