  1. A place open to all citizens The place where the

“public opinion” is formed A place for free association, assembly, expression and publication of opinions The need to be informed
  2. The Public Shpere(s) can only exist in an ideal participatory

society. According to Habermas, two immanent elements of capitalism would work against the creation of the Public Sphere: 1. Education 2. Capital control or influence over organizations of the public sphere (e.g. media, special interest groups).
  3. 1. Accessibility: Who has access to the site (income, education

level, age, gender, ethnicity, origin, etc.)? 2. Content production: Who can produce content? (in other words, which skills/instruments the users need in order to join the conversation?) How visible, relevant and influential is the produced content? Are some point of views overrepresented? Can someone’s opinion be made more visible? If yes, how? 3. Political economic dimension of the medium: Ownership: Is there a democratic ownership of the media organization and resources? Censorship: Is there political and/or economic censorship? 4. Independence: How independent are the sites and discussions from economic and state interests? How inclusive, attentive, sincere, reflexive is the online discussion?
  4. Fuchs’ perspective on Twitter: Twitter is not inclusive Long tail

distribution. It does not overcome class division: it reflects them (participatory toys for white boys) Social media do not cause social protests. They can at the same time amplify and dampen social critique.
  5. Twitter shows the continued importance of Habermas’s argument that the

bourgeois public sphere has created, as Marx has already observed, its own limits and thereby its own immanent critique
  6. Feenberg’s third way. Audience or users? Labour or raw material?

Valorize the unrealized potential of social media, instead of throwing the baby with the bathwater?
