Abstract:
Community networking is an emerging model of a shared communication infrastructure in which communities of citizens build and own open networks. Community networks offer successfully IP-based networking to the user. In addition, some hosts are connected to the network nodes in order to provide network management and end user services. Recently, clouds have been proposed for community networks. Some research projects such as Clommunity have started deploying computational infrastructure to enable cloud computing within community networks. In this paper we propose different options for such community clouds to contribute to energy efficient systems, in particular regarding cloud-based services and in relation to Smart Grid. Further discussion and interaction with the research initiatives on energy efficient systems should identify the most promising approach and outline possible ways for implementation.

  2. Community Networks What's this? A cooperative development of a network

Where: Local, community (city, region, area) Who: You, and your neighbors, … “Don't buy the network, be the network!” Scalable, self-organized and decentralized IP networks and services built and operated by citizens for citizens But what services are in the network? What do you use it for?
  3. Community Clouds The vision of cloud-based services in community networks

We are talking about a specific community cloud: - built in community network - hosted on community-owned computing and communication resources - providing services of local interest Cooperative deployment and maintenance of clouds by citizens for citizens
  4. Using Low-Powered Devices Energy efficient infrastructures for cloud computing with

low-powered devices Customize existing cloud platforms for energy- efficient hardware Community-Lab deployment with low-powered hardware
  5. Smart Grid Support Smart Grid with advanced metering for facilitating

efficient power usage Smart Grid requires infrastructure for data storage and processing Community cloud can provide back-end for processing and storage connected through community mesh networks
  6. Call for the ICT for development and sustainability research community

to exploit community cloud and community networks as a different IT infrastructure model for the future for supporting innovative, sustainable, adaptive, scalable, integrated, autonomic solutions
