  8. Some Thoughts: Generally speaking, government buyers… ManTech Proprietary 9 •Abhor

poor product quality or service performance because it reflects poorly on them. (Contractors behind such products or services go into the "bad vendor" file.) •Want to do business with a contractor who makes life easier, performs well, and offers no hassles. (Such contractors go into the "good vendor" file.) •Want to be dealt with in a truthful, straightforward manner. •Want to be productive, play within the rules, avoid problems and get to the much-sought-after "next grade level.” The average customer doesn’t know that much about the ins and outs of contracting—they just want the service they are contracting for to be performed to standard. However, behind these customers is a phalanx of acquisition experts ready to call you to task!
  9. Some Thoughts: Preparing to Do Business ManTech Proprietary 10 •Make

sure you meet both general government contracting qualifications and those of the specific agency, or you'll waste a lot of time and effort. •Educate yourself thoroughly on the contracting process. Invest in a good government contracting specialist and a good DCAA- knowledgeable accountant/finance specialist (and listen to them!). And don’t forget the security folks! •Don't expect the government to move fast on anything •Contract Awards •Payment (Continuing Resolution the rule, not exception) •Make sure you have resources in place to protect yourself when [inevitable] lags in government payments put your company at potential risk.
  10. Some Thoughts: Doing Business with the Government ManTech Proprietary 11

•Make sure you want to do business with the government. It may be the world's largest customer, but its business comes with many strings attached. •Identify agencies buying your product/service •Call on the customer often—figure out the organizational structure, needs, procedures, influencers (strategic hires?) •Nurture the new customer into a reliable, ongoing customer Bid with knowledge and insight until you win
  11. Some Thoughts: Doing Business with a Prime ManTech Proprietary 12

    • We’re always looking for companies that can fill a specific niche • Past Performance • Technology • Personnel • Looking for relationships; teaming to grow together • Reach out to Primes, educate us on your capabilities, look aggressively for chances to team More opportunities for two-way street as NSA and other organizations broaden efforts to bring in small businesses to prime a significant work-share of what would have been single large contract
